Knesset
The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. As the supreme state body, the Knesset is sovereign and thus has complete control of the entirety of the Israeli government (with the exception of checks and balances from the courts and local governments). The Knesset passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the latter is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government, among other things. In addition, the Knesset elects the state comptroller. It also has the power to waive the immunity of its members, remove the president and the state comptroller from office, dissolve the government in a constructive vote of no confidence, and to dissolve itself and call new elections. David Bar-Rav-Hai
David Bar-Rav-Hai (, 11 July 1894 – 15 July 1977) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Mapai from 1949 until 1955, and again from 1956 until 1965. Biography Born David Borovoi in Nizhyn in the Russian Empire (today in Ukraine), Bar-Rav-Hai joined the Zionist Students Organization in Odessa. In 1911, he moved to Germany, but returned to Russia in 1918 and joined the Young Zion movement, becoming secretary of the Jewish community in Odessa, until the Soviet authorities closed it down in 1920. Afterwards he joined the Zionist underground, and was arrested in 1922. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but was released after 15 months and expelled from the country. In 1924, he made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine, where he joined Hapoel Hatzair. He became a member of the workers councils in Haifa and Jerusalem, and was sent to Poland and Romania as an emissary. Akiva Govrin
Akiva Govrin (; 12 August 1902 – 26 June 1980) was an Israeli politician who served as a government minister between December 1963 and January 1966, and was the country's first Minister of Tourism. Biography Born in the Podolia region of the Russian Empire (today in Ukraine), Govrin was one of the founders of the HeHalutz movement in Ukraine. He made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1922, and worked at Haifa Port and as a construction worker in Jerusalem, where he was one of the founders of the Jerusalem Workers' Council. In 1925 he became a member of the actions committee of the Histadrut, and headed its unions department between 1943 and 1949. In 1949 he was elected to the Knesset on Mapai's list and was appointed chairman of the Labor committee. He was re-elected in 1951, 1955, 1959 and 1961. Yosef Fischer
Yosef Fischer (, born 11 February 1920, died 14 December 1992) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Mapai and its successors between 1959 and 1969. Biography Born in Budapest in Hungary, Fischer made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1935. Between 1938 and 1940 he served in the British Army as a Haganah emissary, before working as a cadet in the Jewish Settlement Police in Hanita and the Haifa Bay area from 1940 until 1943. A Haganah instructor, he was commander of the Kfar Azar training camp in 1947. Between 1947 and 1949 he worked as a manager, before establishing a machine shop in 1949 and becoming active in the Small Industries Association. Levi Eshkol
Levi Eshkol ( he, לֵוִי אֶשְׁכּוֹל ; 25 October 1895 – 26 February 1969), born Levi Yitzhak Shkolnik ( he, לוי יצחק שקולניק, links=no), was an Israeli statesman who served as the third Prime Minister of Israel from 1963 until his death from a heart attack in 1969. A founder of the Israeli Labor Party, he served in numerous senior roles, including Minister of Defense (1963–1967) and Minister of Finance (1952–1963). Amos Degani ( he, עמוס דגני; 23 May 1926 – 29 July 2012) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset between 1957 and 1969. Biography Born in Tel Aviv during the Mandate era, Degani was a member of HaNoar HaOved during his youth, becoming a member of its secretariat in 1942. He studied public administration at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Having been a co-ordinator for the Moshav Youth, he became a member of the Moshavim Movement's secretariat, and served as director of its Department of Youth Settlement and Security. He also worked as a trainer for immigrants in moshavim in the Negev desert. He joined Mapai in 1944, and was a director of its youth leadership. Moshe Dayan
Moshe Dayan ( he, משה דיין; 20 May 1915 – 16 October 1981) was an Israeli military leader and politician. As commander of the Jerusalem front in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (1953–1958) during the 1956 Suez Crisis, but mainly as Defense Minister during the Six-Day War in 1967, he became a worldwide fighting symbol of the new state of Israel. In the 1930s, Dayan joined the Haganah, the pre-state Jewish defense force of Mandatory Palestine. He served in the Special Night Squads under Orde Wingate during the Arab revolt in Palestine and later lost an eye in a raid on Vichy forces in Lebanon during World War II. Yitzhak Coren ( he, יצחק קורן, born 11 March 1911, died 22 June 1994) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Mapai and the Alignment. Biography Born in Chişinău in the Russian Empire (now in Moldova), Coren studied law at university, and was certified as a lawyer. Whilst a student he was amongst the leadership of the Romanian Zionists Student Association. Dr Herzl Berger ( be, Герцаль Бергер; ; 31 July 1904 – 28 August 1962) was a Minsk-born Israeli activist and politician. He served as a member of the Knesset for Mapai between 1951 and 1962. Biography Born in Minsk in the Russian Empire (today in Belarus), Berger attended the Reali High School in his home city. Between 1917 and 1921, he was a member of the Zionist Hashomer Hatzair and HaHaver youth movements, which had been banned by the Soviet authorities. In 1921 he moved to Berlin, where he joined the Right section of Poale Zion, serving as secretary of its central committee between 1930 and 1931.
