Knesset
The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. As the supreme state body, the Knesset is sovereign and thus has complete control of the entirety of the Israeli government (with the exception of checks and balances from the courts and local governments). The Knesset passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the latter is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government, among other things. In addition, the Knesset elects the state comptroller. It also has the power to waive the immunity of its members, remove the president and the state comptroller from office, dissolve the government in a constructive vote of no confidence, and to dissolve itself and call new elections. Jacques Amir
Ya'akov Jacques Amir ( he, יעקב ז'אק אמיר; 15 March 1933 – 31 March 2011) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment between 1974 and 1988. Biography Born Jacques Amzalag in Essaouira in Morocco, Amir was educated in a vocational high school in Casablanca and was a member of the Pioneer youth movement. His father was Yitzhak-Chaim Amzalag. In 1952, he made aliyah to Israel, where he joined kibbutz Ein Gev and the Ahdut HaAvoda party. His first name, Jacques, was accidentally hebraized in Yaakov due to the error of an official at the Haifa port. The following year he moved to kibbutz Ginosar, where he lived until moving to Dimona in 1958. From 1959 until 1974, he worked at the Dead Sea Works, becoming senior foreman of the metal section, and first secretary and chairman of the workers council. Elazar Granot
Elazar Granot ( he, אלעזר גרנות, 12 March 1927 – 19 September 2013) was an Israeli politician and a writer. Biography Born in Jerusalem during the Mandatory Palestine, Granot was educated at Pardes Hanna Agricultural High School, before moving onto the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he studied philosophy, sociology, literature, Hebrew and Bible. During World War II he volunteered for the Jewish Brigade, in which he served between 1944 and 1946. He also fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. In 1951 he became a member of kibbutz Sasa, where he lived until 1958 when he moved to kibbutz Shoval. Between 1962 and 1964 he served as director of the Young Leadership of Mapam, becoming the party's organisational secretary in 1975, and political secretary in 1979. Abba Solomon Meir Eban (; he, אבא אבן ; born Aubrey Solomon Meir Eban; 2 February 1915 – 17 November 2002) was an Israeli diplomat and politician, and a scholar of the Arabic and Hebrew languages. During his career, he served as Foreign Affairs Minister, Education Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister of Israel. He was the second ambassador to the United States and the first Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations. He was also Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly and President of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Simcha Dinitz
Simcha Dinitz ( he, שמחה דיניץ, born 23 June 1929, died 23 September 2003) was an Israeli statesman and politician. He served as Director General of the Prime Minister's office and political advisor to Prime Minister Golda Meir from 1969 to 1973, before becoming the Israeli Ambassador to the United States from 1973 to 1979. He had an overlapping appointment as the Non resident Ambassador to the Bahamas During the 1980s he was elected to the Knesset. Dinitz played a major role in coordinating the weapons shipments to Israel received from the U.S. during the Yom Kippur War airlift in 1973, and was a member of the Israeli delegation during the Camp David peace talks with Egypt. Arab Democratic Party (Israel)
The Arab Democratic Party ( he, translit=Miflaga Demokratit Aravit, מפלגה דמוקרטית ערבית; ar, ألحزب الديمقراطي العربي, translit=al-Hizb al-Dimuqrati al-Arabi), commonly known in Israel by its Hebrew acronym Mada (מד"ע), is a political party in Israel. Abdulwahab Darawshe ( ar, عبد الوهاب دراوشة, he, עבד-אלוהאב דראושה; born 12 October 1943) is an Israeli Arab former politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment and the Arab Democratic Party between 1984 and 1999. Biography Abdulwahab Darawshe was born on 12 October 1943 in Iksal, Mandatory Palestine. He studied at Nazareth High School, before graduating from the University of Haifa with a degree in education and history. He worked as a teacher and headmaster, also serving as a national supervisor for the Ministry of Education, a member of the board of the Teachers' Union's central committee, a member of the Education Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence's board, and chairman of the Arab Association for Education and Grants in Nazareth. Dov Ben-Meir
Dov Ben-Meir ( he, דב בן-מאיר, 11 August 1927 – 21 March 2020) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment between 1981 and 1988. Biography Born Dov Zucker in Ciechocinek in Poland in 1927, Ben-Meir made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1935. He attended the Pardes Hanna Agricultural High School, and later studied for a BA in economics and political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1947 he was amongst the founders of kibbutz Ma'ayan Barukh, where he lived until 1953. He was also a member of the Meuhedet movement, and was amongst its national leadership until 1954. Haim Bar-Lev
Haim "Kidoni" Bar-Lev ( he, חיים בר-לב, 16 November 1924 – 7 May 1994) was a military officer during Israel's pre-state and early statehood eras and later a government minister. Biography Born Haim Brotzlewsky in Vienna and raised in Zagreb, Bar-Lev made aliyah to Mandate Palestine in 1939. From 1942 through 1948, Bar-Lev served in various Jewish military units, such as the Palmach. He became both a pilot and a parachutist, which would later serve him in developing both of these military branches in the young Israel Defense Forces. In 1946 Bar-Lev blew up the Allenby Bridge near Jericho to prevent Arab militiamen in Trans-Jordan from entering Jewish towns west of the Jordan River. Yitzhak Artzi
Yitzhak Artzi ( he, יצחק ארצי, born 14 November 1920, died 17 September 2003) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset between 1984 and 1988. Biography Artzi was born Izo Hertzig in Siret, Romania into a Hassidic family. He was educated at high schools in his hometown and Cernăuți, before attending the Jewish College in Bucharest. A leading activist in the HaNoar HaTzioni youth movement, he was amongst the leadership of the Zionist underground in Romania during World War II, helping to rescue children from transit camps, as well as organising illegal immigration to Palestine and helping in the Cyprus internment camps. He made aliyah to Mandate Palestine himself in 1946, and studied law and economics at Tel Aviv University, gaining certification as a lawyer.
