Math Rock
Math rock is a style of progressive and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush as well as 20th-century minimal music composers such as Steve Reich. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, angular melodies, and extended, often dissonant, chords. It bears similarities to post-rock. Characteristics Math rock is typified by its rhythmic complexity, seen as ''mathematical'' in character by listeners and critics. While most rock music uses a meter (however accented or syncopated), math rock makes use of more non-standard, frequently changing time signatures such as , , , or . Battles (band)
Battles is an American experimental rock group, founded in 2002 in New York City by Ian Williams (formerly of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress). The current line-up is a duo, composed of guitarist/keyboardist Williams and drummer John Stanier (formerly of Helmet, Tomahawk and The Mark of Cain). Former members include composer/vocalist Tyondai Braxton and guitarist/bassist Dave Konopka. The band has released four studio albums to date, with the most recent ''Juice B Crypts'' being released in 2019. The band are regarded as one of the most innovative math rock bands of both the 2000s and the 2010s, with critics praising the band's unique sound. In 2007, ''Pitchfork'' wrote that "Battles have done more to extend the idea of a flesh-and-blood band enhanced by computer technology than anyone since the late, lamented Disco Inferno." Canvas Solaris
Canvas Solaris are an American progressive metal band from Statesboro, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, formed in 1999, and disbanded in 2011. Though they first played with vocals, they moved on to instrumental, drawing influence from bands as diverse as Cynic (band), Cynic, Rush (band), Rush, King Crimson, Death (metal band), Death, Watchtower (band), Watchtower, and The Mars Volta. Biography Hunter Ginn (drums), Nathan Sapp (guitar), and Jimmy McCall (bass) formed Canvas Solaris in 1999 in Statesboro, Georgia. Brad Jeffcoat joined the band to serve as a vocalist. At this point, the band was playing mainly technical death metal, influenced by bands like Voivod (band), Voivod and Carcass (band), Carcass. They recorded two untitled demos of four songs each and toured in South Carolina for several years before Jeffcoat and McCall both left the band. The Cancer Conspiracy
The Cancer Conspiracy was a progressive rock group from Burlington, Vermont featuring guitarist Daryl Rabidoux, drummer/keyboardist/saxophonist Greg Beadle, and bassist Brent Frattini. Rabidoux and Beadle were veterans of the local hardcore scene, and had broken away from their respective bands out of a need to try something new musically. Their initial plans were to find a vocalist and bassist, but after recruiting Frattini, decided to remain an instrumental trio. Their style draws heavily upon 70s progressive rock, particularly King Crimson and Yes, as well as fusion, hardcore, and math rock. Their first self-titled 3 song EP was released in 2001, consisting of 2 studio tracks and 1 live track. Their 9 song full-length debut '' The Audio Medium'' followed in 2002. By The End Of Tonight
By the End of Tonight (often abbreviated to BTEOT) was an American instrumental rock band from Alvin, Texas. They were signed to notable post-rock label Temporary Residence Limited for their life as a band. History By the End of Tonight formed in 2003 by Stefan Mach, Josh Smith, James Templeton, and Jeff Wilson. In 2006 Brett Taylor replaced Josh in the guitar role. They have toured with Anathallo, Tera Melos, Sleeping People, Buxton, O Pioneers, etc. They were the only band ever to be signed by Temporary Residence Limited based only on a demo (in their case, ''...In a Letter to the Sandbox'') Jeff Wilson left the band in early 2008. No replacement was ever found and the band announced through a Myspace bulletin in early 2009 after almost a year of inactivity that they had disbanded. Braid (band)
Braid is an American emo band from Champaign, Illinois, formed in 1993. Following several early line-up changes, the band eventually settled on Bob Nanna on guitar and vocals, Todd Bell on bass, Chris Broach on guitar and vocals, and Roy Ewing on drums until he was replaced in 1997 by new drummer Damon Atkinson. In 1998 the group released their third album, ''Frame & Canvas'', to critical acclaim and is considered a staple of the late 1990s emo movement. Despite ''Frame & Canvass success, Braid disbanded in 1999. Nanna, Bell, and Atkinson formed the more melodic Hey Mercedes, while Broach would dedicate more time to The Firebird Band which was previously a side project. Botch (band)
Botch is an American mathcore band formed in 1993 in Tacoma, Washington. The band, featuring Brian Cook, Dave Knudson, Tim Latona and Dave Verellen, spent four years as a garage band and released several demos and EPs before signing to Hydra Head Records. Through the label, Botch released two studio albums: '' American Nervoso'' (1998) and '' We Are the Romans'' (1999). The group toured extensively and internationally in support of their albums with like-minded bands such as The Blood Brothers, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ink & Dagger and Jesuit. Botch struggled to write a third studio album, and in 2002 the group broke up due to tensions among the band members and creative differences. Hydra Head posthumously released an EP of songs the group had been working on before they split titled '' An Anthology of Dead Ends'' and a live album documenting their final show titled ''061502'' in 2006. Blind Idiot God
Blind Idiot God is an American instrumental rock trio formed in 1982 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, by guitarist Andy Hawkins, bassist Gabriel Katz and drummer Ted Epstein. The phrase "blind idiot god" comes from horror writer H. P. Lovecraft's description of the god Azathoth. Their often improvisational musical style combines influences from punk rock, noise music, 20th-century classical music, heavy metal, dub, free jazz, and funk. They are currently based in New York City and have often collaborated with musicians Bill Laswell and John Zorn. Their self-titled debut album, ''Blind Idiot God'', was issued by SST Records in 1987 and was well received critically. Blakfish
Blakfish was a mathcore band, also described as 'death pop' by the NME, The band from Birmingham, England formed in the year 2000 after meeting and becoming friends at school, contrary to their frequent fabricated claims that they all met in juvenile prison. The band was perhaps best known for its live shows and relentless touring schedule, which led to it being labeled by many as one of the hardest-working bands in the country. In 2007 Blakfish became the full-time job of the members, and in 2008 they went on to play over 200 shows in over 10 countries topping that in 2009 with another 200 shows in 16 countries. They played shows with, amongst others, Hell Is For Heroes (on their farewell tour) and Tubelord. Brian Chippendale (born July 22, 1973) is an American musician and artist, known as the drummer and vocalist for the experimental noise rock band Lightning Bolt and for his graphic art. Chippendale is based in Providence, Rhode Island. Brian plays an assortment of drums usually decorated with prints he makes himself. He uses two ride cymbals as crash rides and a Ludwig snare drum. Early life and education Chippendale was born July 22, 1973 in Newburgh, New York and was raised in a suburb near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chippendale is also an artist and attended printmaking classes at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in the late 1990s through 2000, but did not graduate. Black MIDI is a music genre consisting of compositions that use MIDI files to create a song or a remix containing a large number of notes. People who make black MIDIs are known as blackers. However, there are no specific criteria of what is considered "black"; as a result, pinpointing the exact origin of black MIDI is impossible. Origins and early history Though the two are unrelated in origin, the concept of impossible piano existed long before black MIDI, manifesting itself for example within Conlon Nancarrow's work involving player pianos, in which he punched holes in piano rolls, creating extremely complex musical compositions in the same impossible, unplayable spirit of black MIDI.
