Low-cost Carrier
A low-cost carrier or low-cost airline (occasionally referred to as '' no-frills'', ''budget'' or '' discount carrier'' or ''airline'', and abbreviated as ''LCC'') is an airline that is operated with an especially high emphasis on minimizing operating costs and without some of the traditional services and amenities provided in the fare, resulting in lower fares and fewer comforts. To make up for revenue lost in decreased ticket prices, the airline may charge extra fees – such as for carry-on baggage. As of April 2020, the world's largest low-cost carrier is Southwest Airlines, which operates primarily in the United States, as well as in some surrounding areas. FB Líneas Aéreas S.A., operating as Flybondi, is a low-cost airline in Argentina. The airline, the first of its kind in the country, operates Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with bases in Buenos Aires and Córdoba. All aircraft are registered in Argentina. The airline's inaugural flight from Córdoba's Ingeniero Aeronáutico Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport to Puerto Iguazú's Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport took place on 26 January 2018. Ultra Air S.A.S is a Colombian low-cost airline headquartered in Rionegro, Antioquia, Colombia, with its main base located at José María Córdova International Airport, serving Medellín. History Ultra Air was founded in 2020 by founder and former CEO of Viva Air Colombia & Viva Air Perú and former Interjet CEO William Shaw. Aero República S.A. (trading as Wingo) is a low-cost airline owned by Copa Holdings. Copa announced the creation of Wingo in October 19, 2016 as a replacement for most of its Copa Airlines Colombia business, which had been losing money for several years, and which had lost $29.7 million in the first half of 2016. In November 2019, Wingo announced Carolina Cortizo as their appointed managing director. History Copa stated in 2016 that Wingo would be led by Catalina Bretón, a former JetBlue and Avianca executive, and that Eduardo Lombana, the CEO of Copa Colombia, would be in charge of the airline's administration, finance and operations. Swoop is a Canadian ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) owned by WestJet. The airline is headquartered in Calgary and was named after WestJet's desire to "swoop" (or jump) into the Canadian market with a new business model. It was officially announced on September 27, 2017, and began flights on June 20, 2018. History In April 2017, WestJet announced that it was planning to launch a new airline to enter the growing ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) market and compete against NewLeaf (now Flair Airlines).
