The Channel Islands ( nrf, Îles d'la Manche; french: îles Anglo-Normandes or ''îles de la Manche'') are an archipelago in the English Channel, off the French coast of Normandy. They include two Crown Dependencies: the Bailiwick of Jersey, which is the largest of the islands; and the Bailiwick of Guernsey, consisting of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm and some smaller islands. They are considered the remnants of the Duchy of Normandy and, although they are not part of the United Kingdom, the UK is responsible for the defence and international relations of the islands. The Crown dependencies are not members of the Commonwealth of Nations, nor have they ever been in the European Union. Saint Martin, Jersey
St Martin (Jèrriais: ) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey in the Channel Islands. It is north-east of St Helier. The parish is a mixed rural-urban community and forms the north-east corner of the Jersey rectangle. It has he easternmost point of the Bailiwick. Most of the population is concentrated in the villages of the parish and along La Grande Route de Faldouet and the coast towards St Catherine's. The village of Gorey is partly located in the parish, with the remainder of the village in Grouville. Les Hanois Lighthouse
Les Hanois Lighthouse was constructed between 1860 and 1862 to a design by James Walker, and was first lit on 8 December 1862. It is sited on the rock known as Le Biseau, or Le Bisé, part of the reef Les Hanois one mile north west of Pleinmont where the Trinity House cottages were built. It was erected in response to an increasing number of shipwrecks on the treacherous rocks off the western coast of Guernsey. Gorey (french: Gouray; Jèrriais: ''Gouôrray'') is a village in the parishes of St Martin and Grouville on the east coast of Jersey. The harbour is one of the three main harbours of the island, and is located in St Martin. The main centre of the village is located at Gorey Pier near Mont Orgeuil Castle, a 13th century fortification, in St Martin, while there is a small community with a few shops. The church in the village is known as Gouray Church. History Its position as the closest strategic mainland point to the Cotentin Peninsula has meant that it has a history of fortification going back at least to the Iron Age. St Helier (; Jèrriais: ; french: Saint-Hélier) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. St Helier has a population of 35,822 – over one-third of the total population of Jersey – and is the Capital city, capital of the island. The town of St Helier is the largest settlement and only town of Jersey. Les Casquets
Les Casquets or (The) Casquets ( ) is a group of rocks eight miles (13 km) northwest of Alderney in the Channel Islands; they are administered by the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The rocks are part of an underwater sandstone ridge. Other parts which emerge above the water are the islets of Burhou and Ortac. Little vegetation grows on them. Origin of name Theories as to the origin of the name include: *derivation from the French "cascade", which alludes to the tidal surges which flow around them; *derivation from "casque", referring to the helmet-like shape of the rocks; *derivation from "cas" (broken) and "quet" (rock). A map (''Leyland map'') dated from around 1640 gives a Latin name ''Casus Rupes'' (broken rocks), which would seem to confirm the third theory above, but which may be a folk etymology. Casquets Lighthouses
Casquets Lighthouse is an active lighthouse located on the rocky Les Casquets, Alderney, Channel Islands. History 18th century Originally the lighthouse was one of three lighthouses which were established together on Les Casquets in the early 1720s. All three were lit by coal fires. The decision was taken to build three towers so as to give the lights a distinctive appearance which would not be confused with lighthouses in nearby France, and also to distinguish them from the double lighthouse which had recently been established on Portland Bill to the north (which marked the opposite side of the English Channel). The individual lighthouses were named St Peter's (the north-west tower), St Thomas (the south-west tower) and Dungeon (the easternmost tower). Saint Peter Port Harbour
Saint Peter Port Harbour is located in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey. It was a natural anchorage used by the Romans which has been changed into an artificial harbour that is now the island's main port for passengers. Loose cargo, liquids and gas are shipped to and from St Sampson's harbour. Castle Cornet has formed the harbour main defence for centuries. The castle was formerly a tidal island, but since 1859 a breakwater has connected it to the enlarged harbour. History The earliest evidence of shipping was the discover of a wreck in 1982 in the entrance of the harbour, which has been named "Asterix". It is thought to be a 3rd-century Roman cargo vessel and was probably at anchor or grounded when the fire broke out. The first breakwater, from before the 13th century was a mole, made of loose stones, where the Albert Pier now stands.
