The lieutenant governor of North Dakota is a political office in North Dakota. The lieutenant governor's duty is to preside as President of the Senate, and is responsible for legislative relations, the state budget and agribusiness development. In the event the office of the governor becomes vacant, the lieutenant governor assumes that office and appoints a replacement lieutenant. The current lieutenant governor is Brent Sanford, having been elected and re-elected with Governor Doug Burgum. Before 1974, the lieutenant governor of North Dakota was elected separately from the governor. To avoid hostile relations between a lieutenant governor and governor from different parties, the process was changed to where the governor and lieutenant governor are elected together on a joint ballot and are of the same party. Brent Sanford
Brent Sanford (born December 23, 1971) is an American politician serving as the 38th lieutenant governor of North Dakota since 2016. A member of the Republican Party, he previously was Mayor of Watford City from 2010 to 2016. Career Sanford graduated from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1994. He is a Certified Public Accountant. He worked for Eide Bailly LLP from 1994 through 2002, and then became the chief financial officer of Transwest Trucks in Denver, Colorado. He moved back to Watford City in 2004, taking over his family-run car dealership. He was elected to the Watford City Council in 2006, and became mayor in 2010. Lynn Frazier
Lynn Joseph Frazier (December 21, 1874January 11, 1947) was an American educator and politician who served as the 12th Governor of North Dakota from 1917 until being recalled in 1921 and later served as a U.S. Senator from North Dakota from 1923 to 1941. He was the first American governor ever successfully recalled from office. The only other American governor to ever be recalled is Gray Davis, who was recalled in 2003. Early life Frazier was born in Medford, Minnesota. His family moved to North Dakota when he was six years old. Prior to his career in state and national politics, Frazier was a farmer and school teacher. He graduated from Grafton High School in 1892, and Mayville Normal School in 1895. John Burke (North Dakota Politician)
John Burke (February 25, 1859 – May 14, 1937) was an American lawyer, jurist, and political leader from North Dakota who served as the 10th governor of North Dakota from 1907 to 1913, and later served as the 24th treasurer of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson. Following his term as treasurer, he subsequently served intermittently as Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court first from 1929-1931, then from 1935 until his death in 1937. Early life Burke was born in Sigourney, Iowa of Irish ancestry to John and Mary (née Ryan) Burke. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1886 with a law degree. He married Mary E. Frank White (December 12, 1856March 23, 1940) was the eighth Governor of North Dakota from 1901 to 1905. He was a Republican who also served as Treasurer of the United States from 1921 to 1928. Family Colonel Frank White was born on December 12, 1856, in Stillman Valley, Illinois, to Joshua and Lucy Ann (Brown) White. His father, Joshua, served in the first Wisconsin Constitutional Convention of 1846 and in the Illinois House of Representatives. Education and career White received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1880. David Bartlett (October 23, 1855 – October 16, 1913) was an American lawyer and politician in the state of North Dakota. He served as Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota from 1901 to 1907 under Governors Frank White and Elmore Y. Sarles. Bartlett was born in Lemorna, Maine in 1855. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1876, attaining a law degree. Bartlett resided briefly in Colorado before moving to Cooperstown, North Dakota in 1883, becoming a pioneering businessman and citizen of Griggs County, North Dakota. He served on the North Dakota Constitutional Convention of 1889. Bartlett also served as states attorney of Griggs County, and was a proponent of prohibition.
