Piteå Archipelago
The Piteå archipelago ( sv, Piteå skärgård or ''Pite skärgård'') is a group of Swedish islands in the north part of the Bay of Bothnia, at Piteå in the southeast of Norrbotten County. A few of the islands have small permanent populations, but most are used only for recreation in the summer months. They are icebound during the winter. Location The north of the bay of Bothnia contains a large archipelago area. The islands in the Swedish sector make up the Norrbotten archipelago. It is divided into the archipelagos of Piteå (550 islands), Luleå (1,312 islands), Kalix (792 islands) and Haparanda (652 islands). Due to post-glacial rebound the land is rising at from annually, so the shoreline can retreat by as much as in one person's lifetime. As a result, the islands are growing in size and the waters and harbors are becoming shallower. Grundkallen
Grundkallen is a Swedish lighthouse on a shallow of the same name in the southern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, some northeast of Öregrund. The current lighthouse was built in 1961 to replace a lightship in the same location. It is a round concrete tower with a helipad on top and a round two-storey crew quarters in the bottom, both painted red, mounted on a round caisson which is painted black. The lighthouse, owned by the Swedish Maritime Administration, is automated and unmanned. The wreck of ''Herakles-Bulk'' On 3 March 2004 at around 00:30 (UTC+02) a Finnish pusher-barge combination ''Herakles-Bulk'' sank near the Grundkallen lighthouse. The combination had left Oxelösund two days earlier and was heading north with the barge fully laden with coal. On 2 March she ran into a storm and the captain, not certain if the vessel could be safely turned around in such conditions to seek shelter closer to the coast, decided to evacuate half of the crew by helicopter.
