Barnstable County Hospital
Barnstable County Hospital was a hospital operated by Barnstable County, Massachusetts which was operational from the late 1800s to 1995. It was located in Pocasset, a village in Bourne. It was used after its closing as a medical examiner's office until 1999, when it was finally closed for good. The hospital was the location of the autopsy of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, and her sister after their deaths. Within the county, it was officially run by the Barnstable County Hospital Department, until the hospital was closed on May 1, 1995. In 2003, an agreement was entered which would allow for the creation of affordable housing on the site of the hospital. The site was completely leveled, except for two buildings. Dorchester (colloquially referred to as Dot) is a Boston neighborhood comprising more than in the City of Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Originally, Dorchester was a separate town, founded by Puritans who emigrated in 1630 from Dorchester, Dorset, England, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This dissolved municipality, Boston's largest neighborhood by far, is often divided by city planners in order to create two planning areas roughly equivalent in size and population to other Boston neighborhoods. The hospital had its beginnings in 1863 in South Boston. It was the first Catholic hospital in New England. Among its first patients were American Civil War soldiers. In 1892 a Carney Hospital team performed the first abdominal surgery in Boston. Boston Emergency and General Hospital (commonly referred to as the Emergency Hospital) was an American hospital that ran on a cooperative basis and specialized in the treatment of the working class. Creation The hospital opened on July 3, 1891, as the Emergency Accident Hospital. It was founded by Dr. George W. Galvin, who served as the hospital's superintendent and chief surgeon. It was the first emergency hospital in the United States. Gavin opened the hospital in an annex of the United States Hotel at 144 Kingston Street. He chose this building, which was in the heart of the city's business district, because he believed quick treatment of the frequent industrial accidents that took place there would save lives.
