Globe is located in the heart of Arizona's Tonto National Forest on U.S. Routes 60. Brief history Among the first people known to inhabit the area where Globe is situated were the prehistoric Salado people, who established the Besh Ba Gowah Pueblo. No one knows what happened to the Salado and why they disappeared. The San Carlos Apache's and other Native American tribes settled the area that once belonged to the Salado's. Globe, Arizona
Globe ( apw, Bésh Baa Gowąh "Place of Metal") is a city in Gila County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 7,249. The city is the county seat of Gila County. Globe was founded c. 1875 as a mining camp. Mining, tourism, government and retirees are most important in the present-day Globe economy. The Globe Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Geography Globe is in southern Gila County at (33.399858, −110.781570), in the valley of Pinal Creek, a north-flowing tributary of the Salt River. U.S. Route 60 passes through the city, leading northeast through the Fort Apache Indian Reservation to Show Low, and west to Phoenix. Salado Culture
Salado culture, or Salado Horizon, Todd Bostwick of Pueblo Grande Museum, "Salado Summary". was a human culture in the upper Salt River () of the Tonto Basin in southeastern Arizona from approximately 1150 CE through the 15th century. Distinguishing characteristics of the Salado include distinctive Salado Polychrome pottery, communities within walled adobe compounds, and burial of the dead (rather than cremation). The Salado were farmers, using simple irrigation techniques to water fields of maize, beans, pumpkins, amaranth, and cotton. Yuma Territorial Prison
The Yuma Territorial Prison is a former prison located in Yuma, Arizona, United States. Opened on July 1, 1876, and shut down on September 15, 1909. It is one of the Yuma Crossing and Associated Sites on the National Register of Historic Places in the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area. The site is now operated as a historical museum by Arizona State Parks as Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park. History Prison Opened while Arizona was still a U.S. territory, the prison accepted its first inmate on July 1, 1876. For the next 33 years 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, served sentences there for crimes ranging from murder to polygamy. The prison was under continuous construction with labor provided by the prisoners. United States Post Office And Courthouse–Globe Main
The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse-Globe Main, in Globe, Arizona, was built in 1926. Also known as Globe Post Office and Courthouse and as Globe Main Post Office, the building served historically as a courthouse of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, and as a post office and reflects Beaux Arts architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Its NRHP nomination asserts that it "is a particularly well executed example of federal design in the Neo-Classical style." Gila Valley Bank And Trust Building
The Gila Valley Bank and Trust Building is a former bank building listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Globe, Arizona. It was built in 1909 to house the bank, later known as Valley National Bank of Arizona, and it was listed on the Register in 1987. History The building served as the fourth branch of the Gila Valley Bank and Trust Building, which had been founded in Solomonville in 1900, and it was the first outside of Graham and Greenlee Counties. In 1922, Gila Valley Bank merged with Phoenix-based The Valley Bank and Trust to form what would become known as Valley National Bank of Arizona. Valley National Bank closed the branch in 1952, and the building went through several different tenants, such as a news stand and other merchandise stores. As of 2017, it is in use as an art gallery. Gila County Courthouse
The Gila County Courthouse in Globe, Arizona is a four-story courthouse built in 1906, and adjacent three-story jail behind which many were hanged, built 1909. Today, it is the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts. Architecture The courthouse is a composite of classical designs, but its dominant theme reflects the Italian Renaissance style as interpreted by the architect, W.R. Norton, who was probably following the revival trend started by the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. It is a symmetrical building with pilasters rising to an ornate frieze and cornice. Holy Angels Church (Globe, Arizona)
Holy Angels Church in Globe, Arizona, at 231 S. Broad Street, was built in 1916, and is notable for its architecture and stained glass. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is primarily Romanesque Revival in style but with Mission Revival influences. It has numerous stained glass windows created by Emil Frei and Associates. Its "tufa stone walls are remarkable," as is the story of its construction:A new priest in 1915, Father Virgil Genevrier, "decided that the relatively modest, wood frame and stucco Sacred Heart Church building should be replaced by a new, more inspirational edifice. Chilean Mill
The Chilean mill was a machine used on gold fields in an early period of gold mining. The machine was composed of two rotating wheels that would revolve over a pan filled with gold-bearing rocks. The idea was that the wheels would break open the rocks with gold, so they could harvest gold from multiple rocks at a time. One of the earliest such machines was built in Ballarat in Victoria, Australia during the Victorian gold rush and was combined with a sluice for extracting the gold. Another such machine in Australia was used, at the Fitzroy Iron Works, to grind clay for making firebricks. The bricks were needed for repairing the many furnaces at the works. The Chilean mill, known in Chile as a "trapiche," is still in use in artisanal gold mining in the Andes Mountains. Globe Downtown Historic District
The Globe Downtown Historic District encompasses a group of commercial, religious, and governmental buildings related to the status of Globe as the economic and governmental center of Gila County. Globe was designated as the County Seat of Gila County and grew into the primary economic and commercial center of the Globe mining region. The district also includes three prominent churches and the Globe Post Office and Courthouse, indicative of the area's being the core of civic life in the community. Primary growth of the community occurred between 1880 and 1935, which is considered the period of significance for the district.
