This is a list of some ghost towns in the U.S. State of Colorado. Colorado has over 1,500 ghost towns, although visible remains of only about 640 still exist. Due to incomplete records and legends that are now accepted as fact, no exhaustive list can realistically be produced. __TOC__ Colorado ghost towns Most Colorado ghost towns were abandoned for the following reasons: *Mining towns were abandoned when the mines closed; many due to the devaluation of silver in 1893. *Mill towns were abandoned when the mining towns they serviced closed. *Farming towns on the eastern plains were often deserted due to rural depopulation. *Coal towns were abandoned when the coal (or the need for it) ran out. *Stage stops were abandoned when the railroad came through. *Rail stops were deserted when the railroad changed routes or abandoned the spurs. Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 582,910, making it the fourth-most populous county in Colorado. The county seat is Golden, and the most populous city is Lakewood. Jefferson County is included in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bijou Basin, Colorado
Bijou Basin was a settlement in northern El Paso County, Colorado near Elbert County, Colorado, where there was a train station. Travelers could also take post road 49. It was located five miles southeast of another early settlement, Sidney. A rural post office was established at Bijou Basin in 1869. Settlers established sheep and cattle ranches. Clear Creek County is part of the Denver metropolitan area. Bakerville is a ghost town in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is located west of modern-day Silver Plume, south of I-70 near the fourteener peaks of Grays and Torreys. Description Bakerville is located south of I-70, along Stevens Gulch Road, which runs towards Grays and Torreys to the South. The location is where Quayle Creek, flowing from Grays and Torreys, feeds into Clear Creek, which flows from the Continental Divide. The town is roughly east of the entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel and northeast of Montezuma. The site currently includes a parking lot and several small structures. Autobees, Colorado, also called Autobees Plaza, is an extinct town in Colorado. It was the county seat of Huerfano County, Colorado from 1861 to 1868.
