Special Air Service
The Special Air Service (SAS) is a special forces unit of the British Army. It was founded as a regiment in 1941 by David Stirling and in 1950, it was reconstituted as a corps. The unit specialises in a number of roles including counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, direct action and covert reconnaissance. Much of the information about the SAS is highly classified, and the unit is not commented on by either the British government or the Ministry of Defence due to the secrecy and sensitivity of its operations. The corps currently consists of the 22 Special Air Service Regiment, the regular component, as well as the 21 Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) (Reserve) and the 23 Special Air Service Regiment (Reserve), which are reserve units, all under the operational command of United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF). Frank Collins (British Army Soldier)
Frank Collins (5 November 1956 – 16 June 1998) was a Church of England clergyman and the first 22 Special Air Service, SAS soldier to enter the building in the Iranian Embassy Siege in 1980. Whilst with 22 SAS B Squadron (Air) Troop, Collins served with both Alistair Slater, Al Slater and Charles "Nish" Bruce. He left the service in 1989 after 15 years to work in security and later pursued training for ordained ministry. Having trained at Oak Hill College, a Conservative evangelicalism in the United Kingdom, conservative evangelical theological college, Collins was ordained in the Church of England as a Deacon#Anglicanism, deacon in 1992 and as a Priest#Anglican or Episcopalian, priest in 1993. He served his curacy at St Peter with St Owen and St James, Hereford in the Diocese of Hereford. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Ranulph Fiennes
Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet (born 7 March 1944), commonly known as Sir Ranulph Fiennes () and sometimes as Ran Fiennes, is a British explorer, writer and poet, who holds several endurance records. Fiennes served in the British Army for eight years, including a period on counter-insurgency service while attached to the Army of the Sultanate of Oman. He later undertook numerous expeditions and was the first person to visit both the North Pole and South Pole by surface means and the first to completely cross Antarctica on foot. In May 2009, at the age of 65, he climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. According to the ''Guinness Book of World Records'' in 1984, he was the world's greatest living explorer. David Eyton-Jones
Captain Arthur David Eyton-Jones (8 March 1923 – 1 August 2012) was a British Army officer with the Special Air Service (SAS) during World War II, director of a tea company, landscape gardener and chaplain. He is best known for his involvement in Operation Tombola. Early life Eyton-Jones was born on 8 March 1923 in Forest Hill, Kent, England. He is a grandson of the Reverend Hugh Eyton-Jones, a great-grandson of Dr Thomas Eyton-Jones, and a great-grandson of Sir John Aird, 1st Baronet. He was educated at Monkton Combe School in Somerset. World War II In September 1939, when David was 16 years old, he heard Neville Chamberlain's announcement of the declaration of war with Germany in the drawing room of his great aunt Gertrude Aird's mansion, Sheepcote Manor, in Buckinghamshire. Nick Downie
Nicolas Jon Downie (27 May 1946 – 12 May 2021) was a British journalist and soldier. Education and early career Nick Downie was educated at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, at the Middlesex Hospital and Stirling Lines. One year before his qualification as a doctor, Downie instead joined the Special Air Service as a Trooper. Career Military Downie was the only civilian of 120 applicants to the Regular SAS, but one of six who were accepted into training. Later, Downie stated that at the time he was "your original 10½-stone weakling" but that it was his "all-consuming desire" to serve in the SAS that mattered more than physical fitness during the selection process. He was an instrumental figure in the Dhofar Rebellion, where he destroyed a South Yemen fort (with 1,050 lb of gelignite). Arthur Denaro
Major General Arthur George Denaro (born 23 March 1948) is a former British Army officer. He led his regiment, the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars, during the Gulf War and later became Commandant of Sandhurst. He commanded the 5th Infantry Division from 2000 to 2003. He was the highest-ranking officer of overseas birth in the British Army at that time. Early life Denaro was born in Sungei Patani, Malaya on 23 March 1948 and raised in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland. He is the son of the late Brigadier George Tancred Denaro, CBE, DSO and of Francesca Violet (Peggy) Denaro (née Garnett). Cedric Delves
Lieutenant General Sir Cedric Norman George Delves, (born 1 March 1947) is a retired British Army officer and a former commander of the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment. Military career Delves was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst into the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment of the Prince of Wales's Division on 2 August 1968, and promoted lieutenant on 2 February 1970. Having been promoted to captain on 2 August 1974, he passed selection for the Special Air Service (SAS) and undertook tours in Northern Ireland for which he was Mentioned in Despatches in December 1979 for services between 1 May and 31 July 1979 and again in December 1981 for services between 1 May and 31 July 1981. Director For Security Liaison
An office created in the Private Secretary's Office of the Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom in 2004. The first office-holder was Brigadier Jeffrey Cook, a former Special Air Service (SAS) officer. He served until 2008. As his role was security policy, the whole range of security services for the Sovereign would logically have been within his responsibility. Jeffrey Cook (soldier)
Brigadier Jeffrey Robson Cook, (born 1954) is a retired British Army officer and a former Director for Security Liaison in the Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. He served in the Royal Household from 2004 to 2009, and is now Managing Director of the Morgan Aquila Group. Early life and military career Cook was born in 1954. He entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and, on graduation, was granted a short service commission as a second lieutenant in the Staffordshire Regiment on 9 November 1974. Promoted lieutenant on 9 November 1976 and captain on 2 December 1983, Cook trained as a parachutist and saw service in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and in the Balkans and elsewhere as an officer of the Special Air Service.
