List Of Crossings Of The Murray River
The Murray River in south-eastern Australia has been a significant barrier to land-based travel and trade. This article lists and briefly describes all of the recognised crossing points. Many of these had also developed as river ports for transport of goods along the Murray. Now almost every significant town along the river has a bridge or vehicle-carrying cable ferry nearby. The crossings are listed in order starting from the Murray Mouth and proceeding upstream. South Australia As the ferries are registered as boats, each one has a name, usually named after a waterbird. Murray River
The Murray River (in South Australia: River Murray; Ngarrindjeri language, Ngarrindjeri: ''Millewa'', Yorta Yorta language, Yorta Yorta: ''Dhungala'' or ''Tongala'') is a river in Southeastern Australia. Tailem Bend
Tailem Bend (locally, "Tailem") is a rural town in South Australia, south-east of the state capital of Adelaide. It is located on the lower reaches of the River Murray, near where the river flows into Lake Alexandrina (South Australia), Lake Alexandrina. It is linear in layout since it is constrained by river cliffs on its western side and the Adelaide–Melbourne Melbourne–Adelaide rail corridor, railway line is dominant on its eastern side. The town grew and consolidated through being a large railway centre between the 1890s and 1990s; now it continues to service regional rural communities. Walker Flat
Walker Flat (previously Walkers Flat) is a small town on the Murray River in South Australia. It is one of the crossings of the river by cable ferry. The school opened in 1948 but has since closed. Walker Flat is located approximately from the Adelaide city centre. The Ankara youth camp owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church is on the bank of the river near the ferry. Purnong
Purnong or Purnong Landing is the location of a cable ferry across the Murray River upstream of Mannum. The town is on the cliffs above the left (eastern) bank of the river. It is by road from Mannum on the west side of the Murray, and on the east side. The town was surveyed in 1911 and named for an Aboriginal word meaning ''at the wide place''. Mannum
Mannum is a historic town on the west bank of the Murray River in South Australia, east of Adelaide. Mannum is the seat of the Mid Murray Council, and is situated in the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Barker. History The Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal inhabitants and traditional owners of the vicinity now called Mannum were the Nganguruku (Nganguruga), part of the larger Ngayawung community. In 1830 the Charles Sturt, Sturt expedition passed through the area by boat. No Europeans visited again until 25 January 1838 when the expedition of Dr George Imlay and John Hill (explorer), John Hill, on horseback from Adelaide, became the first to reach the Murray River, Murray overland within South Australia. The Murray River road bridge, Murray Bridge is a bridge in the town of Murray Bridge, South Australia, Murray Bridge, located south-east of Adelaide on the Murray River north of Lake Alexandrina (South Australia), Lake Alexandra. The bridge was built as a road bridge in 1879 and converted for mixed road/rail use shortly thereafter. South Eastern Freeway
South Eastern Freeway is a freeway in South Australia (SA). It is a part of the National Highway network linking the state capital cities of Adelaide, SA, and Melbourne, Victoria, and is signed as route M1. It carries traffic over the Adelaide Hills between Adelaide and the River Murray, near Murray Bridge, where it is connected via the Swanport Bridge to the Dukes Highway, which is the main road route to Victoria. It was formerly signposted as Princes Highway, which refers to the coastal route from Adelaide to Sydney via Melbourne. It is often referred to by South Australians simply as the freeway, as it was the first freeway in South Australia, and is still the longest, and the only one with "Freeway" in its name rather than "Expressway" or "Highway".
