Emilio Bonelli
Don (honorific), Don Emilio Bonelli y Hernando (7 November 1854 in Zaragoza, Aragon – 28 November 1926 in Madrid) was a Spanish military officer, author, explorer, colonial administrator and Africanist (Spain), Africanist. Biography Bonelli entered the Spanish Army in 1875 and attended the Toledo Infantry Academy, achieving the rank of Ensign (rank), ensign in 1878. He left the Army in 1882, and undertook an expedition through the interior of Morocco, crossing the territory between Fez, Morocco, Fez, Meknes and Tangier. In 1884, Bonelli commanded an expedition to take the territory of Río de Oro (Oued Edhahab), occupying the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic coast between Cape Bojador (Ras Bujadur) and Cape Blanco (Ras Nouadhibou) and founding Villa Cisneros (Dakhla, Western Sahara, Dakhla). The Catholic Church in Western Sahara is part of the worldwide Catholic Church (particularly the Latin Church), under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. History Western Sahara is a former Spanish colony, and the Catholic faith was introduced via Spanish colonialism and prior Portuguese exploration. Prior to Spain's abandoning the country in 1975, there were over 20,000 Spanish Catholics, who formed roughly 32% of the total population before the Moroccan occupation. Western Sahara is one of the most religiously homogeneous nations in the world. The World Factbook estimates put the indigenous population to be entirely Muslim. The Christian community is largely composed of around 260 expatriate Spaniards out of a resident population of over 587,000. Spanish West Africa
Spanish West Africa (, AOE) was a grouping of Spanish colonies along the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa. It was formed in 1946 by joining the southern zone of the Spanish protectorate in Morocco, the colony of Ifni and the colony of Spanish Sahara into a single administrative unit. Following the Ifni War (1957–58), Spain ceded the southern protectorate to Morocco, and created separate provinces for Ifni and the Sahara in 1958. Spanish West Africa was formed by a decree of 20 July 1946. The new governor sat at Ifni. José Bermejo López
José Bermejo López (1894 in Cartagena, Murcia – 1971) was a Spanish military officer and colonial administrator. Biography Bermejo entered the Spanish Army at an early age, where he made his professional career. At the time of the Spanish coup of July 1936 he was posted in Temsamane commune, in the Spanish protectorate in Morocco. After the outbreak of the military uprising, Bermejo joined the Nationalist faction and subsequently participated in the Spanish Civil War. In May 1940, with the rank of colonel, Bermejo was appointed Politico-Military Governor of Ifni and the Sahara. During the time he held the position, he did an important work in Spanish Sahara, establishing the administrative capital in Sidi Ifni and dividing the territory into three districts. Ifni
Ifni was a Spanish province on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, south of Agadir and across from the Canary Islands. It had a total area of , and a population of 51,517 in 1964. The main industry was fishing. The present-day Moroccan province in the same area is called Sidi Ifni, with its capital in the city of the same name, but encompassing a much larger territory. History Spain's presence in the area can be traced to a settlement called Santa Cruz de la Mar Pequeña, founded in 1476. After attacks by the Berbers, the Spanish decided to focus on colonising other areas of North Africa and abandoned the region. Antonio de Oro Pulido (Ciempozuelos (Madrid), 13 April 1904 – Tetuán, 28 December 1940) was a Spanish military officer, explorer and colonial administrator.
