This is a list of schools closed by the Detroit Public Schools Community District. There have been about 200 school closures since 2000. Some have been repurposed, while others were torn down, most remain vacant though, although the exact number is unclear. According to Detroiturbex.com and additional historic research, there are 61 abandoned schools to this day, while 36 have been demolished and 2 have been renovated. Detroit Public Schools Community District
Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is a school district that covers all of the city of Detroit, Michigan, United States and high school students in the insular city of Highland Park. The district, which replaced the original Detroit Public Schools (DPS) in 2016, provides services to approximately 50,000 students, making it the largest school district in the state. The district has its headquarters in the Fisher Building of the New Center area of Detroit. The school district has experienced extensive financial difficulties over a series of years. Alexander Macomb (general)
Alexander Macomb (April 3, 1782 – June 25, 1841) was the Commanding General of the United States Army from May 29, 1828, until his death on June 25, 1841. Macomb was the field commander at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 and, after the stunning victory, was lauded with praise and styled "The Hero of Plattsburgh" by some of the American press. He was promoted to Major General for his conduct, receiving both the Thanks of Congress and a Congressional Gold Medal. Edmund Atkinson School
The Edmund Atkinson School is a school building located at 4900 East Hildale Street in Detroit, Michigan. It is currently operating as Legacy Charter Academy. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. History Edmund Atkinson was a Detroit lawyer who served on the city council from 1900 to 1904, and worked as Assistant Corporation Council for the city and for the Detroit Board of Education. His namesake, the Edmund Atkinson School, was designed as a multi-unit school by the architectural firm of McGrath, Dohmen, & Page. The first unit was built in 1927 with a capacity for 580 pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade. It opened the following year, serving students who were primarily first generation immigrants from Eastern European or the Middle East, as well as African American students. The Elizabeth Cleveland Intermediate School, also known as Elizabeth Cleveland Middle School, is a historic building located at 13322 Conant Street in Detroit, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. The school is an excellent example of Collegiate Gothic style, with no alteration to its exterior since construction. The building is still in use as a school, and now houses Frontier International Academy. History The Detroit Public School District began planning for construction of the Elizabeth Cleveland Intermediate School in 1926, by acquiring land and engaging the architectural firm of Donaldson and Meier.
