This is a list of civil parishes in the ceremonial county of Essex, England. There are 307 civil parishes. The former Thurrock Urban District, Benfleet Urban District, Chelmsford Municipal Borough, Harlow Urban District and Clacton Urban District are unparished. Parts of the former Basildon Urban District, Braintree and Bocking Urban District, Brentwood Urban District, Colchester Municipal Borough and Southend-on-Sea County Borough are also unparished. Population figures are not available for some of the smallest parishes. *Salcott, Virley, Peldon, Great and Little Wigborough are governed by the joint Winstred Hundred Parish Council. **Abberton and Langenhoe are governed by the joint Abberton and Langenhoe Parish Council. Civil Parish
In England, a civil parish is a type of administrative parish used for local government. It is a territorial designation which is the lowest tier of local government below districts and counties, or their combined form, the unitary authority. Civil parishes can trace their origin to the ancient system of ecclesiastical parishes, which historically played a role in both secular and religious administration. Civil and religious parishes were formally differentiated in the 19th century and are now entirely separate. Civil parishes in their modern form came into being through the Local Government Act 1894, which established elected parish councils to take on the secular functions of the parish vestry. A civil parish can range in size from a sparsely populated rural area with fewer than a hundred inhabitants, to a large town with a population in the tens of thousands. Ardleigh
Ardleigh is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is situated approximately northeast from the centre of Colchester and northeast from the county town of Chelmsford. Ardleigh is in the district of Tendring and the parliamentary constituency of Harwich and North Essex. The village has its own Parish Council. The parish had a population of 2081 according to the 2001 census and includes the area known as Crockleford Heath. In 1086 Ardleigh was originally owned by Geoffrey de Mandeville. The Great Eastern Main Line passes close to the village but the railway station closed in November 1967. The closest railway station is now at Manningtree, northeast. The village is on the A137 road, a route from Colchester to Ipswich, Suffolk. Ardleigh Reservoir is less than to the southwest. Maldon (, locally ) is a town and civil parish on the Blackwater estuary in Essex, England. It is the seat of the Maldon District and starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. It is known for Maldon Sea Salt which is produced in the area. History Early and medieval history The place-name ''Maldon'' is first attested in 913 in the ''Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'', where it appears as ''Maeldun''. Maldon's name comes from ''mǣl'' meaning 'monument or cross' and ''dūn'' meaning 'hill', so translates as 'monument hill'. East Saxons settled the area in the 5th century and the area to the south is still known as the Dengie Peninsula after the Dæningas. Althorne is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is located east-southeast from the county town and city of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Maldon district and in the parliamentary constituency of Maldon & East Chelmsford. The village has its own Parish Council. The civil parish has a population of 1,159. Althorne is on the Dengie peninsula, about 5 km (3 miles) north-west of Burnham-on-Crouch. Tendring District is a local government district in north-east Essex, England. It extends from the River Stour in the north, to the coast and the River Colne in the south, with the coast to the east and the city of Colchester to the west. Its council is based in Clacton-on-Sea. Tendring Rural District
Tendring is a village and civil parish in Essex. It gives its name to the Tendring District and before that the Tendring Hundred. Its name was given to the larger groupings because it was at the centre, not because it was larger than the other settlements. In 2011 the parish had a population of 736 and the district had a population of 138,048. The linear village straddles the B1035 from Manningtree to Thorpe-le-Soken. The parish includes the settlements of Goose Green, Tendring Green and Tendring Heath. The church is dedicated to St Edmund. The Tendring Union Workhouse was located at Tendring Heath. Alresford ( or ) is a village and electoral ward in Essex, England. It is centred southeast of Colchester and is northeast from the county town of Chelmsford. The three towns of the district are Braintree, Halstead and Witham.
