Domingo Ghirardelli
Domenico "Domingo" Ghirardelli (; February 21, 1817 – January 17, 1894) was an Italian-born chocolatier who was the founder of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company in San Francisco, California. Biography Early life Domenico Ghirardelli was born on February 21, 1817, in Rapallo, Italy, to Giuseppe and Maddalena ( Ferretto) Ghirardelli. His father was a spice merchant in Genoa. In his teens, he apprenticed at Romanengo, a noted chocolatier in Genoa. At about the age of twenty, in 1838, he moved to Uruguay, then in 1838 to Lima, Lima, Peru, where he established a confectionery, and began using the Spanish language, Spanish equivalent of his Italian language, Italian name, Domingo. Charles-Amédée Kohler
Charles-Amédée Kohler (born Charles-Gottlieb Kohler; 15 June 1790 – 15 September 1874) was a Swiss chocolatier and entrepreneur who founded Chocolat Kohler. He notably invented hazelnut chocolate, in his factory opened in 1830 in Lausanne. After his death the Kohler company continued in the Swiss chocolate industry. It merged in 1904 with the Daniel Peter, Peter and in 1911 with the Cailler chocolate brands; before being finally purchased by Nestlé in 1929. Fritz Knipschildt is a Danish chef and chocolatier. Early life and education Born and raised in Odense, Denmark, Knipschildt began at the age of 13, working in a local restaurant as a dishwasher. He quickly advanced and before he had attended culinary school, Knipschildt was put in charge of the bistro kitchen of a new restaurant in the north of Copenhagen. After training at the Hotel and Restaurant School of Denmark, Knipschildt worked in the Mont Blanc area of France twice, and also in southern Spain. Leonidas Kestekides
Leonidas Kestekides (1876 - 1948) was an Ottoman empire-born Belgian chocolate manufacturer, founder of the internationally famous Leonidas company in Belgium. The company's primary focus is pralines (chocolate shells with soft fillings), but they also sell marzipan, solid chocolates, and other confectionery. Life Leonidas Kestekides was born to Cappadocian Greek parents in Nigde, Cappadocia (now in Turkey) in 1876. Accounts of his early years vary, but it appears that he left Constantinople (now Istanbul), lived in Greece for a while and then went to Italy, where he became a wine merchant. Coenraad Johannes Van Houten
Coenraad Johannes van Houten (15 March 1801 – 27 May 1887) was a Dutch chemist and chocolate maker known for the treatment of cocoa mass with alkaline salts to remove the bitter taste and make cocoa solids more water-soluble; the resulting product is still called "Dutch process chocolate".
