Calligraphers
Calligraphy (from el, link=y, καλλιγραφία) is a visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with a pen, ink brush, or other writing instrument. Contemporary calligraphic practice can be defined as "the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner". Modern calligraphy ranges from functional inscriptions and designs to fine-art pieces where the letters may or may not be readable. Classical calligraphy differs from type design and non-classical hand-lettering, though a calligrapher may practice both. Mir Emad Hassani
Mir Emad (born Emad al-Molk Qazvini Hasani ( fa, ),‎ 1554 – August 15, 1615) is perhaps the most celebrated Persian calligrapher. He was born in Qazvin, Iran. It is believed that the Nastaʿlīq style reached its highest elegance in Mir Emad's works. These are amongst the finest specimens of Nastaʿlīq calligraphy and are kept in several museums in the world. Early life and education Mir Emad was born in Qazvin, where he had his early education. Mir Emad's family had librarian and accountant positions in Safavid court. He was trained in calligraphy at first by Isa Rangkar and then Malek Deylami. Mir Emad later on moved to Tabriz to study with Mohammad Hossein Tabrizi. Afterward, he traveled to Ottoman Turkey, Baghdad, Halab and Hijaz. He returned to Semnan and worked as a scribe in Shah Abbas's library and later on his court in the capital of Isfahan. Rudolf Koch
Rudolf Koch (20 November 1876 – 9 April 1934) was a German type designer, professor, and a master of lettering, calligraphy, typography and illustration. Commonly known for his typefaces created for the Klingspor Type Foundry, his most widely used typefaces include Neuland and Kabel. Overview Koch spent his teenage years working in Hanau as an apprentice in a metal goods workshop, whilst also attending art school, where he learned to draw, and soon after went to the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg. Between 1897 and 1906 he worked for various businesses in the book trade in Leipzig, illustrating and designing book covers in the Art Nouveau style that was popular at the time. In 1906 Koch began working for the Rudhard Type foundry in Offenbach, later known as the Klingspor Type foundry. Aslam Kiratpuri
Aslam Kiratpuri, is an Urdu journalist, artist and a professional Lahori Nastalique calligrapher. Kiratpuri creates his calligraphic Toghras, intricate works of calligraphy in different styles using verses from the Quran along with various geometric and floral designs. He is the only Lahori Nastalique style calligrapher in India. Early life He was born in 1951 at Kiratpur (Bijnour) a small town in Uttar Pradesh. He was interested in calligraphy since his childhood and learned the basics and finesse of the art from calligrapher and artist Faiz Mujjadid Lahori. Kim Eung-heon
Kim Eung-heon (; 1927–2007), also spelled Kim Ung-hyon, was a prominent South Korean calligrapher. In 1956, Kim and others supporters of Korean traditional culture established the Tongbang Yonsohoe for the purpose of researching and promoting Eastern calligraphy. The calligrapher served as president of this organization, promoting the art form in a number of East Asian countries. Edward Johnston
Edward Johnston, CBE (11 February 1872 – 26 November 1944) was a British craftsman who is regarded, with Rudolf Koch, as the father of modern calligraphy, in the particular form of the broad-edged pen as a writing tool. He is most famous for designing the sans-serif Johnston typeface that was used throughout the London Underground system until it was redesigned in the 1980s. He also redesigned the famous roundel symbol used throughout the system. Early life Johnston was born in San José de Mayo, Uruguay. His father, Fowell Buxton Johnston (born 1839), was an officer in the 3rd Dragoon Guards, and the younger son of Scottish MP Andrew Johnston and his second wife, abolitionist Priscilla Buxton, daughter of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, 1st Baronet. Jiang Kui
Jiāng Kuí () (c. 1155 Poyang – c. 1221 Hangzhou), courtesy name Yaozhang (), Art name Baishi Daoren (). Also known as "Jiang Baishi" () was a famous Chinese poet, composer, poetry theorist and calligrapher of the Song Dynasty, particularly famed for his ''ci'' (song lyric poetry). He composed numerous poems, including the famous "He Bei Lai" and the more well known "San Wan Yue." Life Jiang was born in Poyang (in today's Jiangxi province). His family was of mediocre social status and Kui himself did not obtain any post in the government throughout his life. His father was a county magistrate during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Song. Jiang made multiple attempts on the imperial exam but was not able to pass them. He traveled extensively between the regions of Hubei, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu and Fujian. Jang Il-soon
Jang Il-Soon (3 September 1928 in Wonju – 22 May 1994) was a South Korean educator and social and environment activist. His pen names are ''Chunggang'' (clean water), ''Muwydang'' (wu-wei), and ''Ilsokja'' (a hulled millet). He was a spiritual supporter of poet Kim Chi-Ha, who represented the democratization movement in the 1970s and developed a campaign for life through Hansallim. In 1994, he died from stomach cancer. Shinjō Itō
is the founder of the Buddhist school Shinnyo-en. He was born in Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan. After a career as an aeronautic engineer, he dedicated himself to a religious life. He trained at the Daigo-ji monastery and became a Great Master (Great Acharya) of Shingon Buddhism, and founded Shinnyo-en in 1936. Besides his work as a Great Buddhist Master and teacher, Ito is also known as a talented Buddhist sculptor and photographer. Thomas Ingmire
Thomas Ingmire is an American calligrapher, born in 1942 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1977 he became the first American elected to England's Society of Scribes and Illuminators with a craft membership status. He is one of the illuminators of the St. John's Bible ''The Saint John’s Bible'' is the first completely handwritten and illuminated manuscript, illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictines, Benedictine abbey since the movable type, invention of the printing press.
