Contract Bridge
Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. In its basic format, it is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. Millions of people play bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home, making it one of the world's most popular card games, particularly among seniors. The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is the governing body for international competitive bridge, with numerous other bodies governing it at the regional level. Richard Freeman (bridge)
Richard A. Freeman (July 21, 1933 – June 29, 2009) was a world champion American bridge player holding the title of World Grand Master, the highest title of the World Bridge Federation. He won the Bermuda Bowl world team championship and won many national championships. Freeman was inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 2001. At the time of his death he held 17,880 masterpoints. Early life He was born in 1933, and was from Atlanta, Georgia. He was a radio Quiz Kid in 1942. In 1952, Freeman became the youngest Life Master in the ACBL ever at that time. In January 1964, he became editor of newly published ''Modern Bridge'' magazine. In 1993 he was a founding member of the Nick Nickell team where he played until his death as Nickell's professional partner. He died in Atlanta. By age 13 Freeman was in his third year at the University of Chicago. He later graduated from the University of Chicago and received a J.D. from George Washington University. ''Bridge d'Italia'' is the official magazine for the Italian contract bridge game federation, Federazione Italiana Gioco Bridge (FIGB). It has been published since January 1938. History and profile The magazine was first published in January 1938 under the title ''Bollettino Mensile'' (''Monthly Bulletin''). In November that year the title was changed by the Fascist administration to the ''Monthly Bulletin of the Italian Ponte Association''. Between December 1941 and 1946 the magazine temporarily ceased publication due to World War II. In 1946 the magazine could publish only one issue with the title ''Bridge'', and from 1947 its frequency was made monthly. In 1953 the magazine was renamed as ''Bridge d'Italia'' of which editor-in-chief was Cesare Guglielmetti. Canadian Bridge Federation
The Canadian Bridge FederationCBF, (La Fédération Canadienne de Bridge''FCB), is the primary organizational body for contract bridge in Canada. Like its American counterpart, the United States Bridge Federation, the CBF promotes bridge by running tournaments for youths and adults and provides financial support for teams that represent Canada in international competition. Bridge Magazine
''Bridge Magazine'' was a British monthly magazine devoted to the game of contract bridge. It was the oldest such magazine having been established in 1926 by A. E. Manning Foster. It was not published during World War II, so it had fewer issues than ''The Bridge World''. The ''Bridge Plus'', a monthly magazine that was published between 1999 and 2008, was incorporated into Bridge Magazine. The magazine changed its title to ''Bridge International'' in 1984, to ''Bridge'' in 1990 and back to ''Bridge Magazine'' in 1992. In the June 2013 issue Mark Horton, the editor, announced that in future the magazine would only be published online because the paper version had been losing too much money. Terence Reese
John Terence Reese (28 August 1913 – 29 January 1996) was a British bridge player and writer, regarded as one of the finest of all time in both fields. He was born in Epsom, Surrey, England to middle-class parents, and was educated at Bradfield College and New College, Oxford, where he studied classics and attained a double first, graduating in 1935. Life Reese's father, the son of a Welsh clergyman, worked in a bank until he transferred to his wife's family catering business. Hubert Phillips
Hubert Phillips (13 December 1891 – 9 January 1964) was a British economist, journalist, broadcaster, bridge player and organiser, composer of puzzles and quizzes, and the author of some 70 books. Life Education and early career Phillips was educated at Sexey's School, Bruton, and Merton College, Oxford, where he read History and Economics, taking a first class degree. He served in the British Army with the Essex Regiment throughout World War I. After the war, he became Head of the Department of Economics at Bristol University and Head of Extra-Mural Studies 1919–24; he was Director, Liberal Research Dept 1924; Economic Adviser and Secretary, Liberal Industrial Inquiry 1924–28; and adviser to the Parliamentary Liberal Party 1926-8. Audrey Lindop Grant is a Canadian professional educator and a contract bridge teacher and writer known for her simple and humorous approach to the game. Grant is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
