Kingston Upon Hull
Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated to Hull, is a port city and unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It lies upon the River Hull at its confluence with the Humber Estuary, inland from the North Sea and south-east of York, the historic county town. With a population of (), it is the fourth-largest city in the Yorkshire and the Humber region after Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford. The town of Wyke on Hull was founded late in the 12th century by the monks of Meaux Abbey as a port from which to export their wool. Renamed ''Kings-town upon Hull'' in 1299, Hull had been a market town, military supply port, trading centre, fishing and whaling centre and industrial metropolis. Sculcoates
Sculcoates is a suburb of Kingston upon Hull, north of the city centre, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. For many centuries, much of what was called Hull came within the parish of St Mary's Church. Sculcoates railway station closed on 9 June 1912. Amenities Sculcoates has a library, a post office, a high school, two primary schools and a swimming bath called Beverley Road Baths. The baths was opened in 1905, and underwent a £3.75 million refurbishment from June 2020 until reopening in August 2021. The baths are a Grade II Listed building. Orchard Park Estate
Orchard Park Estate is an area or housing estate situated on the north-western side of Kingston upon Hull, England. Geography The Orchard Park Estate is on the northern eastern fringe of the western part Kingston upon Hull adjacent to the city boundary. Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire is directly to the west; the North Hull Estate (Greenwood Avenue) is contiguous adjacent to the south; the eastern boundary is formed by the Beverley and Barmston Drain, beyond which is more housing, and the River Hull (); to the north is open farmland. As of 2014 primary schools in the area are Thorpepark Primary; The Parks Primary Academy; and St Anthony's (Roman Catholic). North Hull Estate
The North Hull Estate is a residential area in the north of Kingston upon Hull, west of the River Hull, built by Hull Corporation in the interwar period. The area includes a wide area of housing including ''The Quadrant'', the Endike Lane area, and the North Hull estate proper, north of Endike Lane. History Before the establishment of the estate, the area was enclosed farmland. The east-west Cottingham Road (Cottingham branch of the Hull and Beverley Trust, former turnpike), Inglemire Lane, Endike Lane, and North Carr Lane (later Orchard Park Road) were already in existence and date to before the 19th century. In addition to agriculture a number of clay extraction was taking place at a number of sites in the area for brick and tile manufacture during the latter part of the 19th century; these were inactive by the early 20th century. Newland, Kingston Upon Hull
Newland is a suburb of Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in the north-west of the city, a former village on the Hull to Beverley turnpike. Before the mid 18th century Newland was a hamlet in a partially swampy agricultural area, located near the crossroads of Cottingham and Beverley-Hull turnpikes. Extensive enclosure and drainage took place after 1766, and it briefly developed as a preferred place for Hull merchants in the 19th century. The future parish church, St John's, was built in 1833, and in 1862 the ecclesiastical parish of Newland was established as separate from Cottingham in the East Riding. By the beginning of the 20th century the urban spread of Hull had reached Newland, and over the next half century the village was surrounded by housing and other developments. Gipsyville is a western suburb of Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Gipsyville was established at the beginning of the 20th century as a housing and factory development and derives its name from a black lead product ''"Gipsy Black Metal Polish"'' that was produced locally at the Hargreaves & Bros company works. During the interwar period a large council estate of over 1,000 dwellings was built to the north of the original development. Dairycoates
Dairycoates is an area of Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, a former hamlet. The area was formerly the site of a major North Eastern Railway engine shed, ''Dairycoates Engine Shed'' (est.1863, closed 1970). Most of the Dairycoates area is now in industrial use, including the ''Brighton Street Industrial Estate'', located on former rail use land. The Avenues, Kingston Upon Hull
The Avenues is an area of high status Victorian housing located in the north-west of Kingston upon Hull, England. It is formed by four main tree-lined straight avenues running west off the north-north-east/south-south-west running ''Princes Avenue''. The Avenues area, originally built as middle class housing in the late 19th century, has remained a popular residential area; its popularity with left wing intellectuals and academics, and varied leafy cosmopolitan ambience has caused it to be stereotyped as Hull's 'Muesli Belt'. To the adjoining south of the Avenues is an area of roughly contemporary Victorian terraces, with streets named after the seats of nobles; it is sometimes referred to as ''the Dukeries''. East Ella
East Ella is a small suburb to the west of the Eastern England city of Kingston upon Hull. East Ella was an area of common land to the east of the nearby village of Anlaby and the west of Hull. History Like Anlaby Common, East Ella was once common land near the start of the large city of Hull. By the 1890s the Hull, Barnsley and West Riding Junction Railway had been constructed, east–west, across the land, and construction of terraced and court housing had taken place north-west of Spring Villa (''Ditmas Avenue'' etc.), on the north side of Anlaby Road. The railway built a locomotive works ( Springhead locomotive works), and sidings in the north-eastern part of the common.
