Geraldine Byrne Nason
Geraldine Byrne Nason (born 1959) is an Irish diplomat who is currently Ambassador of Ireland to the United States of America. Early life and education Nason was born in Drogheda in 1959, and attended Our Lady's College, Greenhills. She has a BA and MA in Literature from St Patrick's College, Maynooth. Career Nason joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1981. She was Director for Governance at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris in the 1990s. She has served at the UN in New York, Vienna, Geneva, and Helsinki. Nason served as Second Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach from 2011 until 2014, making her the highest-ranking female civil servant in the country. Timothy Aloysius Smiddy (1875–1962) was an Irish academic, economist, and diplomat. He is best known as Ireland's first Ambassador/overseas Minister, serving as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States of America for the Irish Free State from 1924 to 1929. Personal life Timothy Aloysius "Audo" Smiddy was born on 30 April 1875 in Kilbarry, County Cork, the son of William Smiddy, a wealthy merchant originally from Ballymacoda, East Cork, and Honora Mahony, of the Blarney Mahony family. He was educated at St. Finbarr's College Cork, before attending University College Cork, graduating with a B.A. (1905) and an M.A. (1907). Michael MacWhite
Michael MacWhite (1883 – 1958) was an Irish diplomat. He was born in Reenogreena, near Glandore, County Cork in 1883. Amongst other postings, he served as the first Irish permanent delegate to the League of Nations. Early career MacWhite worked as a teacher in Denmark and as a newspaper correspondent. He also fought for Bulgaria in the first Balkan War. He then joined the French Foreign Legion and fought in France, Greece and Turkey. He was wounded at Gallipoli and was awarded the Croix de Guerre three times for bravery in combat. He returned to Dublin after the Great War and offered his services to the fledgling Dáil Éireann. League of Nations In 1921, MacWhite was sent to Geneva as Dáil Éireann representative at the establishment of the League of Nations. He reported to George Gavan Duffy. Robert Brennan (22 July 1881 – 13 November 1964) was an Irish writer, diplomat and a founder of ''The Irish Press'' newspaper. He took part in the 1916 Easter Rising and later became the Irish Free State's first minister to the United States. He was the father of Irish-American author and ''New Yorker'' columnist Maeve Brennan. Life Brennan was born at John's Gate Street, Wexford, the son of Robert Brennan, a victualler, and Bridget Kearney. He was a member of the staff of the ''Enniscorthy Echo''. Daniel Mulhall (born 8 April 1955) is a retired Irish diplomat and a former Ambassador of Ireland to the United States. He has also been Ireland's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Germany and Malaysia. Education Born in Waterford, Ireland, Mulhall studied at University College Cork. He received a BA degree degree in 1975, a Higher Diploma in Education in 1978, and an MA in history in 1979. Career Mulhall joined Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs in 1978 as Third Secretary in the Economics Division.
