This is a list of ambassadors of Austria to the United States. The United States first established diplomatic relations with Austria in 1838 during the time of the Austrian Empire. Relations between the United States have been continuous since that time except for two interruptions during World War I and World War II. Wolfgang is a German male given name traditionally popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The name is a combination of the Old High German words ''wolf'', meaning "wolf", and ''gang'', meaning "path", "journey", "travel". Besides the regular "wolf", the first element also occurs in Old High German as the combining form "-olf". The earliest reference of the name being used was in the 8th century. The name was also attested as "Vulfgang" in the Reichenauer Verbrüderungsbuch in the 9th century. The earliest recorded famous bearer of the name was a tenth-century Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg. Hans Peter Manz (born October 7, 1955 in Canberra, Australia) is an Austrian diplomat. He is the son of Austrian diplomats and grew up in Vienna. Hans Peter Manz graduated from the Theresian Academy in Vienna and then studied law receiving a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1977. From 2011 to 2015 Dr. Manz served as Austrian Ambassador to the United States of America, succeeding Dr. Christian Prosl. During his distinguished diplomatic career, Dr. Manz served in a variety of positions, including inter alia, foreign policy advisor to the Chancellor of Austria. His overseas postings included Tehran, Bern and New York City. Eva Nowotny (born 17 February 1944 in Vienna) is chair of the Board of the University of Vienna. She has been Austrian ambassador to France (1992–1997), to the Court of St. James's (United Kingdom) (1997–1999), and to the United States. From 1983 to 1992, Nowotny served as foreign policy advisor to the Austrian chancellors Fred Sinowatz and Franz Vranitzky. She was an assistant professor at the University of Vienna from 1969 to 1973. Eva Nowotny is married to Thomas Nowotny, a retired diplomat, author and lecturer on international relations. She is a member of the Advisory Council of Independent Diplomat. She has one daughter and two grandchildren. Thomas Klestil (; 4 November 1932 – 6 July 2004) was an Austrian diplomat and politician who served as President of Austria from 1992 to his death in 2004. He was elected in 1992 and re-elected into office in 1998. Biography until 1992 Born in Vienna to a working class family — his father was a tramway employee — Klestil went to school in Landstraße where he made friends with Joe Zawinul. He studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and received his doctorate in 1957. After entering the civil service he worked in Austria as well as abroad, e.g. for OECD. In 1969, he established the Austrian consul (representative), consulate-general in Los Angeles, where he befriended Arnold Schwarzenegger.
