This is a list of airlines of Mexico. The airline industry in Mexico began in 1921 with Compañía Mexicana de Transportación Aérea in Mexico City. Later known as Mexicana, it was the world's 4th oldest airline, and ceased operations on August 28, 2010. Aeroméxico is currently Mexico's largest airline. List Interjet has ceased all operations and is defunct as of December 2020. Grupo Aereo Monterrey S.A. de C.V., known under the commercial name Magnicharters, is an airline with its headquarters in Colonia Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City, operating domestic holiday flights out of Mexico City International Airport. History The travel agency Magnitur was created in 1984. Magnicharters was established in 1994 by the Bojórquez family to fly the clients of Magnitur. It started operations in January 1995. Focusing on the domestic tourism market, it mainly serves the major beach resorts of the country. Magnicharters was the first Mexican commercial airline to hire a woman pilot. In 2000, Magnicharters was allowed to offer commercial flights (only charters and cargo flights before). In 2014, Magnicharters invested $2.5 million to develop its fleet by 30%. Calafia Airlines is a Mexican low-cost airline founded in 1993, based in the Cabo San Lucas International Airfield. It was formerly named Aéreo Calafia till mid 2016, when as part of a commercial expansion project they decided to use a more commercial name, since they are negotiating international destinations. Aviesa S.A de C.V is a charter airline of Mexico. Its services are FBO, ACMI, handling, aircraft lease and sale, air taxi, VIP charters, aircraft management, air ambulance, cargo, aircraft repair and support for commercial and private aviation. Founded in 1986 by Grupo Hermanos Abed (GHA), the airline was grounded in 1994 after the company's demise. The airline was reborn the next year as an independent entity and in 2002 was acquired by Asclepiodoto Abed, the former director of GHA. It was under their control until October 2008, when Abed died (presumably from SCLC): after his death, Aviesa was converted into a 100% individual company.
