This is a list of active Spanish Navy ships, complete and correct as of December 2016. There are approximately 139 vessels in the Navy, including minor auxiliary vessels. A breakdown includes; one amphibious assault ship (also used as an aircraft carrier), two amphibious transport docks, 11 frigates, two submarines, six mine countermeasure vessels, 22 patrol vessels and a number of auxiliary ships. The total displacement of the Spanish Navy is approximately 225,000 tonnes. Amphibious Transport Dock
An amphibious transport dock, also called a landing platform dock (LPD), is an amphibious warfare ship, a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions. Several navies currently operate this kind of ship. The ships are generally designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea, primarily using landing craft, although invariably they also have the capability to operate transport helicopters. Amphibious transport docks perform the mission of amphibious transports, amphibious cargo ships, and the older dock landing ships (LSD) by incorporating both a flight deck and a well deck that can be ballasted and deballasted to support landing craft or amphibious vehicles. Spanish Patrol Vessel Rayo (P-42)
''Rayo'' (P-42) is the second ship of the Meteoro class, a new kind of offshore patrol vessel created for the Spanish Navy and called BAMs. Operational history It was laid down on September 3, 2009, at the Puerto Real-San Fernando shipyard. It was launched on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, sponsored by Defense Minister Carme Chacón, after which, it continued its construction process afloat. Between May 27 and July 1, 2011, it performed its sea trials as far as the platform is concerned. Spanish Patrol Vessel Meteoro (P-41)
''Meteoro'' (P-41) is the lead ship of the ''Meteoro'' class, a new kind of offshore patrol vessel created for the Spanish Navy and called BAMs. Operational history Construction began on October 4, 2007 with the cutting of the first sheet and the keel was placed on the stand on March 13, 2009 in the shipyard of San Fernando. She was launched on Friday, October 16, 2009, sponsored by Minister of Economy Elena Salgado, with the anecdote that the ship slid down the stage 11 minutes before the scheduled time, when the ceremony had just begun. On Friday, January 28, 2011, she successfully completed her sea trials in the Bay of Cadiz waters, prior to its delivery to the Navy, completing her last tests in July 2011.
