Cartoonists (and their work) awarded a grant from the Xeric Foundation, allowing them to self-publish their comics. The awards are broken down by year and grant cycle (March and September). Xeric Foundation
The Xeric Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation based in Northampton, Massachusetts, which for twenty years awarded self-publishing grants to comic book creators, as well as qualified charitable and nonprofit organizations. The Xeric Foundation was established by Peter Laird, co-creator of the ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles''. Mission and operation Laird founded the Foundation after considerable thought, as "an appropriate way to give back something extra to the comics world," by providing grants for self-publishers.Wiater, Stanley & Bissette, Stephen R. Garret Izumi
A garret is a habitable attic, a living space at the top of a house or larger residential building, traditionally, small, dismal, and cramped, with sloping ceilings. In the days before elevators this was the least prestigious position in a building, at the very top of the stairs. Etymology The word entered Middle English through Old French with a military connotation of watchtower, garrison or billet a place for guards or soldiers to be quartered in a house. Like garrison, it comes from an Old French word of ultimately Germanic origin meaning "to provide" or "defend". Andy Hartzell
Andy Hartzell is a cartoonist who lives in Oakland, California. In 1995, he was awarded a Xeric Grant to publish his book ''Bread & Circuses''. In 2007, Hartzell published '' Fox Bunny Funny'', which was reviewed favorably by ''The New York Times'' and the '' San Francisco Examiner''. He was a designer for the game developer Telltale Games from January 2008. Hartzell is also a co-founder of a minicomics distribution company called Global Hobo Distro. Scott Frederick Gilbert (born 1949) is an American evolutionary developmental biologist and historian of biology. Scott Gilbert is the Howard A. Schneiderman Professor of Biology (''emeritus'') at Swarthmore College and a Finland Distinguished Professor (''emeritus'') at the University of Helsinki. Education He obtained his B.A. in both biology and religion from Wesleyan University (1971). The kris, or ''keris'' in the Indonesian language, is an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade-patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron and nickelous iron (''pamor''). Of Javanese origin, the kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, although many have straight blades as well, and is one of the weapons commonly used in the '' pencak silat'' martial art native to Indonesia. David Tompkins (comics)
Sir David Lance Tompkins (26 July 1929 – 1 July 2023) was a New Zealand lawyer and jurist. He served as a judge of the High Court of New Zealand from 1983 to 1997 and on the benches of the Courts of Appeal of Tonga and Fiji. He was chancellor of the University of Waikato between 1981 and 1985. Early life and family Tompkins was born in Hamilton on 26 July 1929, the son of Arthur Lance Tompkins and Marjorie Rees Tompkins (née Manning). His maternal grandfather was Arthur Edwards Manning who served as mayor of Hamilton from 1912 to 1915, and his paternal great-aunt was the artist Helen Crabb. He was educated at Southwell School in Hamilton from 1939 to 1942, and King's College, Auckland from 1943 to 1946. He went on to study law at Auckland University College, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1952.
