List Of West Virginia Covered Bridges
This is a list of West Virginia covered bridges. There are 17 historic wooden covered bridges in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Only three of these bridges were built before 1870 and they are the three longest in the state. Each uses a standard truss design, braced with the Burr Arch. No one-truss design dominates in the state. The bridges are located in three general areas. In the south in Monroe and Greenbrier counties there are about a half dozen bridges within an easy drive of one another. Barrackville Covered Bridge - Side In Winter
Barrackville is a town in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,211 at the 2020 census. Barrackville was settled beginning in 1767 by William Galloway "Indian Billy" Ice. The town was named in honor of John Barrack, an early settler. It was incorporated January 25, 1968. Geography Barrackville is located at (39.502741, -80.169713), along Buffalo Creek. Center Point, West Virginia
Center Point is an unincorporated community in northeastern Doddridge County, West Virginia, United States. It lies along Route 23 northeast of the town of West Union, the county seat of Doddridge County. Its elevation is 791 feet (241 m). Historically, the community has also been known as Three Forks of McElroy (or Three Fork), Centerpoint, Centre Point, and Mount Pleasant; the Board on Geographic Names officially designated the current name and spelling in 1964. it had a post office until November 2, 2002, and still has a ZIP code 26339. Harrison County, West Virginia
Harrison County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 65,921. Its county seat is Clarksburg. Harrison County is part of the Clarksburg, WV Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Indigenous peoples lived in the area that would become Harrison County for thousands of years. The Oak Mounds outside Clarksburg were built by the Hopewell culture mound builders during the first millennium CE. 18th century White trappers visited the area that is now Harrison County as early as the 1760s. Some traded with the Native Americans of the area. The Virginia Colony claimed the area as part of its vast Augusta County. The first permanent settler in the area was hunter and trapper John Simpson, who erected a cabin at the mouth of Elk Creek on the West Fork River in 1763 or '64. Fletcher Covered Bridge
The Fletcher Covered Bridge is a Multiple King Post covered bridge located near Marshville in Harrison County, West Virginia. The bridge crosses Tenmile Creek is West Virginia bridge number 48-17-03. Stones for the abutments were quarried at the top of a hill near the bridge site. The original building cost was $1,372. The Fletcher Covered Bridge is one of only two covered bridges still standing in Harrison County, the other is the Simpson Creek Covered Bridge. This bridge is in regular use today. Location Fletcher Covered Bridge is located on Marshville Road 1.6 miles past the intersection with US Route 50. Upgrades Under a $447,000 contract, Allegheny Restoration and Builders, Inc. of Morgantown restored the Fletcher Covered Bridge, including detouring local traffic while structural timber was replaced and new siding and a metal roof were installed. Wetzel County, West Virginia
Wetzel County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,442. Its county seat is New Martinsville. The county, founded in 1846, is named for Lewis Wetzel, a famous frontiersman and Indian fighter. Its northern border aligns with the Mason-Dixon line, but is to the west of the line's western terminus. History Wetzel County was formed in 1846 from part of Tyler County, Virginia. Hundred is a town in Wetzel County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 257 at the 2020 census. It was named for the fact that local resident Henry "Old Hundred" Church was a centenarian. Hundred is the only place in the United States with this name. Fish Creek Covered Bridge - Side View
Fish are aquatic, craniate, gill-bearing animals that lack limbs with digits. Included in this definition are the living hagfish, lampreys, and cartilaginous and bony fish as well as various extinct related groups. Approximately 95% of living fish species are ray-finned fish, belonging to the class Actinopterygii, with around 99% of those being teleosts. The earliest organisms that can be classified as fish were soft-bodied chordates that first appeared during the Cambrian period. Although they lacked a true spine, they possessed notochords which allowed them to be more agile than their invertebrate counterparts. Fish Creek Covered Bridge
The Fish Creek Covered Bridge was built ''circa'' 1881 near Hundred, West Virginia, United States. The kingpost truss bridge spans only . It is the last remaining covered bridge in Wetzel County and one of two remaining single kingpost truss bridges in West Virginia. The bridge has been structurally reinforced with six W8x12 wide-flange steel beams replacing wood stringers. The bridge is enclosed with painted wood siding and a galvanized metal roof. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. The 1881 bridge was replaced by another covered bridge in 2001. King Post
A king post (or king-post or kingpost) is a central vertical post used in architectural or bridge designs, working in tension to support a beam below from a truss apex above (whereas a crown post, though visually similar, supports items above from the beam below). In aircraft design a strut called a king post acts in compression, similarly to an architectural crown post. Usage in mechanical plant and marine engineering differs again, as noted below.
