List Of West Virginia Civil War Union Units
West Virginia, which seceded from Virginia to join the Union, provided the following units to the Union Army during the American Civil War. Units raised in the western counties prior to the creation of the state of West Virginia were often known as, "loyal Virginians," who formed the Restored government of Virginia in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1861, unanimously electing Francis H. Pierpont as the new state governor. The state produced the most highly-decorated cavalry regiment of the Union Army (tied with the 47th Ohio as the most highly-decorated single regiment), and was credited with 32,000 Union soldiers, including 10 Brigadier and Major Generals. The soldier count by the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War estimates West Virginia's to be around 20,000, and others at around 25,000, with an unknown number serving in the regiments of surrounding states. 3rd West Virginia Cavalry
The 3rd West Virginia Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1864, the regiment had an important part in the Battle of Moorefield, where a surprise attack led by General William W. Averell routed Confederate cavalry. The regiment also fought in the latter part of General Philip H. Sheridan's Valley Campaign, and was part of Capehart's Fighting Brigade in General George Armstrong Custer's Third Division. It was present at General Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at the Battle of Appomattox Court House. The 6th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 6th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was mustered into Federal service on August 13, 1861, at Grafton, Mannington, Cairo, Parkersburg and Wheeling, in western Virginia. The regiment spent most of its service guarding the Baltimore & Ohio railroad line, fighting numerous small skirmishes against Confederate raiders and bushwhackers. The 5th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 5th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was organized at Ceredo, West Virginia, beginning on September 3, 1861, and mustered in on October 18, 1861. Originally mustered into service as the 5th Virginia Regiment of the Union Army, it became the 5th West Virginia when West Virginia was designated a distinct state. 4th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 4th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 4th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was mustered into Federal service on June 17, 1861, at Grafton, Point Pleasant, and Mason City, Virginia. It was recruited primarily in Ohio from the counties of Meigs, Gallia, Lawrence and Athens, which contributed seven full companies. Among its early recruits was future United States Congressman John L. Vance, who would rise to the rank of lieutenant colonel. The regiment fought in the Kanawha Valley Campaign of 1862 as part of a brigade commanded by Colonel Samuel A. Gilbert. The 3rd West Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. On May 23, 1863, it was converted to a mounted infantry by Brigadier General William W. Averell. The regiment was immediately sent to a camp for instruction and supplied. In 1864, it was converted to the 6th West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Service The 3rd West Virginia Infantry Regiment fought at the Battle of McDowell on May, 1862 and the Battle of Cross Keys, June 8, 1862, under LTC Francis W. Thompson, part of BG Robert Milroy's Brigade made up of 5 Virginia regiments loyal to the Union (units which later were designated West Virginian) and 1 Ohio regiment and 3 Ohio artillery batteries.
