Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. The 1936 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 50th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 26 April 1936 and ended on 6 September 1936. Kilkenny GAA, Kilkenny entered the championship as 1935 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, defending champions, however, they were defeated by Limerick GAA, Limerick in the 1936 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, All-Ireland final on a score line of 5–6 to 1–5 victory. Mount Sion GAA
Mount Sion ( ga, Cnoc Sion) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Waterford City, County Waterford, Ireland. It was founded by teachers in the school of the same name. Although technically separate from the school, the club still maintains a close relationship with the school, sharing the same sports facilities in the city. The club fields teams in both the Waterford Hurling and Gaelic football championships and has had many famous players, including John Keane, Philly Grimes, Tony Browne and Ken McGrath. The club is mainly concerned with the game of hurling and is the most successful in Waterford with 35 county title wins, although they did win 5 county football titles back in the 1950s. They have also won 2 Munster Senior Hurling titles, in 1981 with victory over Limerick club South Liberties (3-9 to 1-4) and in 2002 beating Sixmilebridge of Clare (0-12 to 0-10). John Keane (hurler)
John Keane (18 February 1917 – 1 October 1975) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-back at senior level for the Waterford county team. Born in Waterford, Keane first played competitive hurling during his school days at Mount Sion CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he first linked up with the Waterford minor team, before later lining out with the junior side. He made his senior debut in the 1934–35 National Hurling League. Keane went on to play a key part for a Waterford team that made a long overdue breakthrough, and won one All-Ireland medal and two Munster medals. As a representative of the Munster inter-provincial team for twelve years, Keane won seven Railway Cup medals during that period. At club level he won eight championship medals with Mount Sion. The 1939 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 53rd staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 7 May 1939 and ended on 3 September 1939. Dublin entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by Kilkenny in the Leinster final. The All-Ireland final was played on 3 September 1939 at Croke Park in Dublin, between Kilkenny and Cork, in what was their first meeting in a final in nine years. Kilkenny won the match by 2-07 to 3-03 to claim their 12th championship title overall and a first title since 1935. The 1939 All-Ireland final remains one of the most iconic of all time. Passage GAA is a Hurling Club with Club Grounds the East Waterford village of Passage East with Players representing the Club from nearby areas of Dunmore East, Cheekpoint, Woodstown, Faithlegg, Ballymacaw and environs. Passage came close a number of times to capturing the Senior Hurling County Title losing three Waterford Senior Hurling Finals during the 1990s.
