picture info	Volkskammer __NOTOC__ The Volkskammer (, ''People's Chamber'') was the unicameral legislature of the German Democratic Republic (colloquially known as East Germany). The Volkskammer was initially the lower house of a bicameral legislature. The upper house was the Chamber of States, or ''Länderkammer'', but in 1952 the states of East Germany were dissolved, and the Chamber was abolished in 1958. Constitutionally, the Volkskammer was the highest organ of state power in the GDR, and both constitutions vested it with great lawmaking powers. All other branches of government, including the judiciary, were responsible to it. By 1960, the chamber appointed the Council of the State, the Council of Ministers, and the National Defence Council. In practice, however, it was a pseudo-parliament that did little more than rubber-stamp decisions already made by the SED — always by unanimous consent — and listen to the General Secretary's speeches. 	Günter Hartmann Günter Hartmann (born March 18, 1930) is a German politician who was chairman of the National Democratic Party of Germany, and a member of the Volkskammer. Life Hartmann was born on March 18, 1930, in Halberstadt. Following the end of the Second World War, he became a member of the Free German Youth and the Free German Trade Union Federation. From 1947 to 1948 Hartmann studied at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, graduating as a surveyor. In 1949, he joined the National Democratic Party of Germany (NDPD). Beginning in 1951, Hartmann worked varying positions as an NDPD party functionary. In 1973, Hartmann became a member of the Volkskammer. He served on the Volkskammer's foreign affairs committee. 	Hans-Joachim Willerding Hans-Joachim "Jochen" Willerding (born 19 April 1952) is a former politician (SED) of the German Democratic Republic. On 8 November 1989 he was elected to membership of the powerful Central Committee of the country's ruling Socialist Unity Party where he sat as the committee's youngest member. A couple of days later the Berlin Wall was breached, setting in motion events that would lead to reunification in October 1990. 	Hans Jendretzky Gustav Ernst Hans Jendretzky (20 July 1897 – 2 July 1992) was a German Communist politician. He was a prominent politician of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). He became a member of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1919 and of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in 1920. 	Erich Mückenberger Erich Mückenberger (1910 in Chemnitz – 1998 in Berlin) was a German socialist politician. He began his political career in the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) when the East German branches of SPD and the Communist Party of Germany merged after the Second World War.
