Nations At Swedish Universities
The student nations or ''nationer'' at the two ancient universities in Uppsala and Lund, of which there are now thirteen at each university, are the oldest student societies in Sweden. The Uppsala nations have a history stretching back to around 1630–1640. The nations in Lund were formed at the time of the foundation of the university (1666) or shortly thereafter. Traditionally, students were required to be members of the nation corresponding to the area from which they came. With one exception, Södermanland-Nerikes nation at Uppsala, this requirement is now voided, and students may even join more than one nation. International students are also free to choose whichever nation they desire. The nations are in charge of the sorts of social activities and venues that at other universities are handled by the student unions, fraternities, or companies: bars, clubs, theatre companies, orchestras, sports societies, and also some housing. Västmanlands-Dala nation, mostly referred to only as V-Dala, is one of the 13 student nations at Uppsala University in Sweden. The nation, intended for students from the provinces of Dalarna and Västmanland – these provinces making up most of the diocese of Västerås – was founded in 1639. Norrlands nation is a student society and the largest of thirteen nations at Uppsala University. It mainly recruits its members from the province of Norrland, which is the northernmost part of Sweden. As of 2012, the nation has about 8,000 members. The nation is religiously and politically unaffiliated and offers its members access to libraries, housing, scholarships and opportunities to participate in a wide range of sporting, cultural and entertainment activities. Norrlands nation was formed in 1827 through a merger of some smaller nations with roots dating back to the mid 17th century. Värmlands nation is one of the 13 student nations at Uppsala University. Värmlands nation catchment corresponds to Karlstad diocese, that is, the regions Värmland and Dalsland. No formal requirement related to any of these landscapes are nowadays a must. The nation has a wide range of activities, in addition to the nation's restaurant, café, pub and party activities the nation also has a library to borrow literature from. Kalmar (, , ) is a city in the southeast of Sweden, situated by the Baltic Sea. It had 36,392 inhabitants in 2010 and is the seat of Kalmar Municipality.
