List Of University Of Santo Tomas Buildings
The following is a list of buildings at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Sampaloc, Manila. The university sits on an almost perfect square of 21.5 hectares. The university transferred to its present campus in 1927 when the Dominicans deemed the Intramuros campus inadequate for the university's growing population. The first structures in the campus were the imposing Main Building (University of Santo Tomas), Main Building, the Santisimo Rosario Parish, and the UST Gym. The Main Building and Central Seminary were declared National Cultural Treasures by the National Museum of the Philippines on January 25, 2010. The University of Santo Tomas (also known as UST and officially as the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Manila) is a private, Catholic research university in Manila, Philippines. Founded on April 28, 1611, by Spanish friar Miguel de Benavides, third Archbishop of Manila, it has the oldest extant university charter in the Philippines and in Asia, and is one of the world's largest Catholic universities in terms of enrollment found on one campus. It is the main campus of the University of Santo Tomas System that is run by the Order of Preachers. UST was granted the title “Royal” by King Charles III of Spain in 1785. Roque Ruaño
Roque Ruaño Garrido, O.P. (August 16, 1877 – March 5, 1935) was a Spanish priest-civil engineer. He was known after he drew up plans for University of Santo Tomas (UST) Main Building, the first earthquake-shock resistant building in Asia, which was constructed at the Sulucan property of the Dominican order in city of Manila. Early life Born on August 16, 1877 in Palencia, Spain, Fr. Roque Ruaño submitted himself in faith to the Dominican Order in 1894. He first arrived in the Philippines on July 21, 1904. Upon arrival to the country, he served his first few years in the Colegio de San Juan de Letran as Father Rector. The University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Pharmacy is the pharmaceutical school of the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest and the largest Catholic university in Manila, Philippines. Established in 1871, the faculty is the first school of pharmacy in the Philippines. It consistently tops the philippine licensure examinations for pharmacy and medical technology. Buenaventura García De Paredes
Buenaventura García de Paredes (April 19, 1866 in Castañedo de Valdés – August 12, 1936) was a Dominican priest and Master of the Order of Preachers. Early biography Paredes was born and baptized on April 19, 1866 in Castañedo de Valdés, near Luarca (Asturias). As a young boy he took care of his father’s sheep. Paredes' brother was a priest. Education Paredes began his primary studies in his hometown and in a preceptory at the behest of the Dominican priest Esteban Sacrest, he entered the Apostolic School or the Minor Seminary of Corias (Asturias), where he continued his studies for two years, but his precarious health forced him to go home and rest. Later Paredes studied at the Apostolic School of Ocaña ( Toledo) making his profession on August 31, 1884. Paredes studied philosophy at Ocaña, and theology at the convent of Santo Tomás at Ávila. The University of Santo Tomas Junior High School (USTJHS), formerly called University of Santo Tomas High School, was established on June 6, 1928, and is one of the junior high school departments of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), located at Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines. USTJHS offers four years of high school, starting from Grade 7 to 10. The remaining two years of high school (Grade 11 and Grade 12) were transferred to the recently established University of Santo Tomas Senior High School.
