List of United States national rugby union players is a list of people who have played for the United States national rugby union team. The list only includes players who have played in a match recognized by USA Rugby as a test match (rugby union), test match, whether it was played before or after the governing body was founded in 1975. (In rugby union, any match of a nation's senior side recognized as a Test by its national governing body is included in test statistics for that nation.) Players that were first capped during the same match are listed in order of those that began in the starting line up before replacements and then in alphabetical order by surname. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. Deke Gard
Frank Jacob "Deke" Gard (March 27, 1892 – September 27, 1918) was an American rugby union player who played flanker for the United States men's national team in its first two capped matches in 1912 and 1913. Early life and university years Gard was born on March 27, 1892, in Tremont City, Ohio, the eldest child of Emerson Earl Gard and Laura E. Gard (born Shanley). Gard moved with his family from Ohio to Glendora, California, in 1905 and attended Citrus Union High School, from which he graduated in 1910. Gard attended Stanford University from 1910 until 1914 and graduated in May 1914 with a degree in chemistry. While at Stanford, Gard played for the rugby team, serving as the team's captain during the 1914 season. During his senior season, Gard was described as "one of hebest forwards on the estcoast." Laird Monterey "Monte" Morris (October 9, 1889 – August 19, 1954) was an American rugby union player who played at scrum-half for the United States men's national team in its first capped match in 1912. Biography Morris was born on October 9, 1889, in California. He was the son of Henry Bishop Morris and Mary Kathryn Morris (born Baker). Morris attended the University of California, where in 1910 he earned a place on the varsity rugby team. In 1911, Morris was late to return to the university, but eventually did so and rejoined the rugby team. During the 1912 season, Morris saw his playing time reduced as the coaching staff attempted to develop other players to play his position, although he remained the best player at that position on the university team. The 1913 New Zealand tour rugby of North America was the second tour by the New Zealand national rugby union outside Australasia. Sixteen matches were played (all won) along with a Test match against United States sides. The tour had a relevance for American rugby because it came at a time when the local code, American football, was widely criticized prompted by worries over violent play, serious injuries and evidence of sharp practice by college coaches. That dispute, originated in 1906, had led some colleges (such as Stanford and California, Berkeley Universities) to switch from football to rugby.
