List Of Ukrainian Opera Singers
This is a list of opera singers from Ukraine, Soviet Union and Russian Empire, including ethnic Ukrainians and people of other ethnicities. This list includes those who were born in Ukraine/Soviet Union/Poland but later emigrated, and those, who were born elsewhere but immigrated to the country and performed there for a long time. Opera came to the Russian Empire in the 18th century. At first there were mostly Italian-language operas presented by Italian opera troupes. Later some Ukrainian composers serving to the Russian Imperial Court such as Dmitry Bortniansky and Maksym Berezovsky began to write operas in French and Italian. Composers in the 19th century included Semen Hulak-Artemovsky, Mykola Lysenko, and Mykhailo Verbytsky. Their traditions were carried on to the 20th century by Yuliy Meitus, Heorhiy Maiboroda, Stanyslav Lyudkevych and Oleksandr Bilash. Opera
Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Such a "work" (the literal translation of the Italian word "opera") is typically a collaboration between a composer and a librettist and incorporates a number of the performing arts, such as acting, scenery, costume, and sometimes dance or ballet. The performance is typically given in an opera house, accompanied by an orchestra or smaller musical ensemble, which since the early 19th century has been led by a conductor. Solomiya Krushelnytska
Solomiya Amvrosiivna KrushelnytskaHer name is sometimes spelt as Solomiya Ambrosiyivna Krushelnytska, Salomea Krusceniski, Krushel'nytska or Kruszelnicka. ( uk, Соломія Амвро́сіївна Крушельницька, links=no; September 23 1 1872 — November 16, 1952) was a Ukrainian soprano, considered to be one of the brightest opera stars of the first half of the 20th century. During her life, Solomiya Krushelnytska was recognized as the most outstanding singer in the world. Among her numerous awards and distinctions, in particular, the title of "Wagner's diva" of the 20th century. Singing with her on the same stage was considered an honor for Enrico Caruso, Titta Ruffo, Fedor Chaliapin. Italian composer Giacomo Puccini presented the singer with his portrait with the inscription "The most beautiful and charming Butterfly". Kateryna Kasper (born 1986) is a Ukrainian operatic soprano. A member of the Oper Frankfurt, she has appeared in major international opera houses. She has performed in recitals and recordings. Her broad repertory includes works from Cavalieri's '' Spiel von Seele und Körper'' to the premiere of ''Der goldene Drache'' by Péter Eötvös. Career Kasper studied voice at the Prokofiev State Music Academy in Donetsk. After her bachelor exam, she continued her studies on a scholarship by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg with Edith Wiens. Dmytro Hnatyuk ( uk, Дмитро́ Миха́йлович Гнатю́к; 28 March 1925 – 29 April 2016) was a Soviet and Ukrainian baritone opera singer and a former member of the Ukrainian Parliament. Biography Dmytro Hnatyuk was born on 28 March 1925 in the village of Mămăești, Sipeniț district, Cernăuți County, Romania. He graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory in 1951 as an opera and chamber singer. He was a singer at the Kiev Opera and Ballet Theatre appearing as a soloist in many songs. Borys Hmyria
Borys Romanovych Hmyria ( ua, Борис Романович Гмиря), also known as Boris Romanovich Gmyrya(russian: Борис Романович Гмыря; August 1, 1969) PAU, was a Soviet and Ukrainian bass singer of opera and art song. Biography Hmyria was born in 1903 in Lebedin, Kharkov Governorate, Russian Empire (today part of Ukraine). He remained in Poltava during World War II where he performed for the Germans. This kind of behavior was considered collaboration with the enemy by Soviet authorities. Hmyria would have been imprisoned and executed had it not been for Joseph Stalin's intervention. Hmyria's partner, Valentina Ishchenko, was exiled to Vorkuta in the Komi ASSR. He died in Kiev in 1969. Zoia Gaidai
Zoia Mikhailovna Gaidai (b. in Tambov – d. 21 April 1965 in Kiev) was a Soviet and Ukrainian opera soprano. She was an artist of wide creativity, with a bright vocal range and talent who staged more than 50 musicals of the works of Ukrainian and Russian composers, as well as works of the classical repertoire of Western European composers. She kept close contact with other composers of her time, such as Mykola Lysenko, Boris Lyatoshynsky, Viktor Kosenko, and Levko Revutsky. Oksana Dyka ( uk, Оксана Дика, link=no ; born 16 June 1978, in Zhytomyr), also rendered as Dika, is a Ukrainian operatic soprano. Career Dyka graduated in 2004 at the Kyiv Conservatory and sang as a soloist at the Kyiv Opera from 2003 until 2007. She won the 2003 Marseilles International Opera Competition which led to her performance as Tosca at the Opéra national de Montpellier in 2005, a role which she sang again that year at the Estonian National Opera opposite Sergei Leiferkus as Scarpia, at the Dalhalla Opera Festival in Sweden; in 2008 she sang that role at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and at the Arena di Verona. Andrij Dobriansky
Andrij Dobriansky ( uk, Андрій Добрянський; September 2, 1930February 1, 2012) was a principal artist with the Metropolitan Opera for 30 years where he sang over 60 roles in over 900 performances. As a displaced person in post-war Germany, he earned a scholarship to study chemistry at Amherst College, but later decided to forgo chemistry and pursued a career in opera. The bass-baritone had the longest career with the Met of any Ukrainian-born artist. Andrei Bondarenko
Andrei Bondarenko or Andriy Bondarenko ( uk, Андрíй Володи́мирович Бондаре́нко, born 1987) is a Ukrainian baritone opera singer. Life Bondarenko was born and brought up in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine. He trained at the Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music in Kyiv. He won the "Art in the 21st Century" competition in Vorzel, and was a prize-winner at the 2006 International Rimsky-Korsakov competition in St Petersburg and the 2008 Nadezhda Obuhova Young Vocalists´ Festival. In 2007 he joined the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers and has studied in Kyiv with Valery Buimister. Bondarenko appeared in the Salzburg Festival in 2009, and in 2011 represented Ukraine in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, winning the Song Prize and getting through to the final for which he became hot favourite.
