Taras Shevchenko
Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko ( uk, Тарас Григорович Шевченко , pronounced without the middle name; – ), also known as Kobzar Taras, or simply Kobzar (a kobzar is a bard in Ukrainian culture), was a Ukraine, Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, public and political figure, folklore, folklorist and ethnography, ethnographer.Taras Shevchenko in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, 3rd Edition. 1970-1979 (in English) His literary heritage is regarded to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and, to a large extent, the modern Ukrainian language, though this is different from the language of his poems. Dmytro Blazheyovskyi
Dmytro Blazheyovskyi (Ukrainian: Дмитро Блажейовський; 21 August 1910 – 23 April 2011) was a Ukrainian Catholic priest and writer. Blazheyovskyi authored over twenty-five scholarly articles on the history of the Ukrainian church. He died in Lviv, aged 100. Blazheyovskyi was well known in Ukraine for his numerous sketches of traditional Ukrainian embroidery. Throughout his life, Blazheyovskyi had exhibitions of his work in his home country and abroad. On 6 May 1999, he opened a museum in Lviv. He was awarded with the Shevchenko National Prize. Biography Father Doctor Dmytro Blazheyovskyi was born in 1910 in Wisłok Wielki, Sianik, Lemkivshchyna. Nina Bichuya
Nina Bichuya (born 24 August 1937) is a Ukrainian writer who has published several novels and children's works. Bichuya studied journalism at Lviv University and has worked as a director at the Lviv Theatre for Young People (Перший український театр для дітей та юнацтва). Natalia Belchenko
Natalia Belchenko, also spelled Beltchenko (born January 7, 1973) is a Ukrainian poet and translator. Early life and education Natalia Belchenko was born on January 7, 1973, in Kyiv. She completed studies in Philology at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Career Natalia Belchenko debuted in 1997, with a book titled ''Sleep Warden.'' She has published nine poetry collections. Belchenko is a laureate of several awards, including the Hubert-Burda-Preis für junge Lyrik (2000) and the National Writer’s Union of Ukraine Mykola Ushakov Prize in Literature (2006). In 2017 she won a scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage “Gaude Polonia” program. Her poems have been translated into German, French, English, Bulgarian, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian and Hebrew. Mykola Bazhan
Mykola Platonovych Bazhan (; – 23 November 1983) was a Soviet Ukrainian writer, poet, highly decorated political and public figure. He was an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1951), Merited Science Specialist of Ukrainian SSR (1966), Merited Art Specialist of Georgian SSR (1964), People's Poet of Uzbek SSR. Career Bazhan was a People's Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union for two of five convocations (1946–1962), and the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR for six of nine convocations (1963–1980). He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Ukrainian SSR on several occasions at the party's congresses (17 of and 21 of 25). Volodymyr Ivanovych Barvinok
Barvinok Volodymyr Ivanovych (July 22, 1879 in Ohramyyevychi, Chernihiv oblast, Russian Empire – 1943 in Kiev, Soviet Union) was a Ukrainian historian, theologist, bibliographer, writer, archaeologist, prominent archivist, statesman of the Ukrainian National Republic, honorary citizen of the Chernihiv region, scholar at the Ukrainian Academy of Science, and teacher of Ukrainian culture and history. Early Life Volodymyr Barvinok was born in 1879 at the family country house, which was located in the Ogramyyevychi village in the Chernihiv region. In 1905, Barvinok graduated from the Kyiv Mohyla Academy, which today is called the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Vasyl Barka
Wasyl Barka (pseud. of Vasyl Ocheret, born 16 July 1908 in the village of Solonytsia in the Lubensky Uyezd of the Poltava Governorate (now Lubny Raion, Ukraine), died 11 April 2003 in Liberty, New York) was an American-residing Ukrainian poet, writer, literary critic, and translator. Biography Vasyl Barka's family had a Cossack origin. In 1927, Barka graduated from Lubny Pedagogical College, and then worked as a teacher in a mining village in Donbas. There he did not get along with the local authorities, and went to the North Caucasus. In 1928, he entered the philology faculty of Krasnodar Pedagogical Institute and worked at the Krasnodar Art Museum. Supported by Pavlo Tychyna, Barka's work first appeared in print in 1929. The publication of his first book of poems in 1930 provoked much ideological criticism, including accusations of "bourgeois nationalism" and "religious carry-overs". Mykola Bakay
Mykola Petrovych Bakay ( uk, Микола Петрович Бакай) (2 March 1931 – 28 July 1998) was a Ukrainian singer, composer, poet, author and Soviet dissident. Biography Bakay was born in the village of , in the Pokuttia region, which was at that time under Polish rule. Due to the outbreak of World War II he was only able to finish seventh class. In 1947, Bakay together with his family was deported to Siberia. He attempted to escape twice, but was not able to succeed. As punishment he was forcefully settled to work at the logging sites and factories near Omsk. There he studied at the local music school of Vissarion Shebalin and later worked as an actor at the Omsk Theater of Operetta. Bakay returned from the forced settlement in 1960. He moved to Chernivtsi, where he began singing in the Bukovina ensemble of song and dance. Ivan Bahrianyi ( uk, Іван Багряний) (2 October 1906 – 25 August 1963) was a Ukrainian writer, essayist, novelist and politician, Shevchenko prize awardee (1992, postmortem). The writer's real name was Ivan Pavlovych Lozoviaha (Lozoviahin). Biography Early years Ivan Bahrianyi was born in the village of Kuzemyn, Kharkiv Governorate, Russian Empire, in the family of a bricklayer. His education was not consistent, due to the difficulty of life during First World War, the revolution and the post-war chaos in education. He started at age of 6 in church-parochial school. Bohdan Ihor Antonych
Bohdan Ihor Antonych ( uk, Богдан-Ігор Антонич; 5 October 1909, in Nowica, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Nowica – 6 July 1937, in Lviv) was a 20th-century Ukrainian poet. In 1934 Antonych received third prize honours from the Ivan Franko Society of Writers and Journalists for his work ''Three Signet Rings''. Biography Antonych was born and raised in the Lemkos, Lemko village of Nowica, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Nowica where his father, Vasyl, was a parish priest. In 1928 Antonych left Nowica to study at Lviv University, where he remained until he received his degree in Slavic studies in 1933. In order to help finance his chosen career of professional writer, he occasionally worked as an editor for journals such as ''Dazhboh'' and ''Karby''. Antonych died from pneumonia on 6 July 1937.
