UK Garage
UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic dance music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre was most clearly inspired by garage house, but also incorporates elements from dance-pop, R&B, and jungle. It is defined by percussive, shuffled rhythms with syncopated hi-hats, cymbals, and snares, and may include either 4/4 house kick patterns or more irregular " 2-step" rhythms. Garage tracks also commonly feature 'chopped up' and time-stretched or pitch-shifted vocal samples complementing the underlying rhythmic structure at a tempo usually around 130 BPM. UK garage encompassed subgenres such as speed garage and 2-step, and was then largely subsumed into other styles of music and production in the mid-2000s, including bassline, grime, and dubstep. DJ Luck & MC Neat
DJ Luck & MC Neat are a British musical duo, composed of Joel Samuels (a.k.a. DJ Luck) and Michael Rose (a.k.a. MC Neat) mainly performing a combination of house music and UK garage. They had three consecutive top 10 hits in the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2000. Career They are primarily known for their 1999 single, " A Little Bit of Luck", which started as a promotional dubplate, released at the price of £5. The track peaked at #9 in the United Kingdom in January 2000. That same year, they released a cover of " Master Blaster (Jammin)" by Stevie Wonder, retitled " Masterblaster 2000", which featured the vocals of JJ, who is on a number of Luck & Neat's songs. The track was their highest British chart entry, reaching #5 in June 2000. Their version of Ollie & Jerry's " Breakin'... Bassline Junkie
"Bassline Junkie" is a song by British rapper Dizzee Rascal from his mixtape ''Dirtee TV.com – The Mixtape EP, Vol.2'' (2013). The song was produced by M. J. Cole and peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart despite not being officially released as a single. The track also appeared on '' The Fifth'', Dizzee's 2013 album, and was one of the few UK urban tracks on the album, with most tracks continuing his move away from grime and garage to other genres. Music video The video was released on YouTube on 31 December 2012. It follows Rascal and his friend (played by comedian Eric Lampaert) preaching "the way of the bassline". They first visit a block of flats, where Rascal aggressively threatens a small boy after he turns off the " large speakers" that the song is playing through, only to be silenced himself when the boy's mother confronts him. Wookie (musician)
Jason Chue, better known as Wookie, is a UK garage musician. He scored a UK top 10 hit in 2000 with his song "Battle (song), Battle". Biography Chue's career began in 1991 as a producer for UK R&B/reggae artist Wayne Marshall (singer), Wayne Marshall, producing most of Marshall's debut album ''90 Degrees and Rising'' in 1994. Shortly after, Chue became writer/producer for Soul II Soul at their studio, working with Jazzie B for several years. He would also go on to produce for Dynamite MC and Doom Man. Chue has remixed tracks by Destiny's Child, Public Enemy (group), Public Enemy and Nas, among others. In the late 1990s, the 'Wookie sound' became apparent in his Bootleg recording, bootleg mixes of songs by Whitney Houston, Brandy Norwood, Brandy and Debelah Morgan. Ashley Walters (born 30 June 1982), also known by his stage name Asher D, is a British rapper, songwriter and actor. He played Ricky in ''Bullet Boy'' (2004), the lead role as Dushane Hill in ''Top Boy'', and Antwan in ''Get Rich or Die Tryin''' (2005). 3 of a Kind were a UK garage act, best known for their 2004 number one hit single, "Baby Cakes". Its members were Liana Caruana (a.k.a. Miz Tipzta), Nicholas Gallante (a.k.a. MC Devine) and Marc Portelli. Marc and Liana met the day they recorded "Baby Cakes". Career 2004: "Baby Cakes" "Baby Cakes" went straight to number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, and to number 3 on the Irish Singles Chart. Baby Cakes
"Baby Cakes" is the only single released by British garage trio 3 of a Kind. It debuted atop the UK Singles Chart on 15 August 2004, becoming the band's only chart hit. ''Mixmag'' included "Baby Cakes" on their "40 of the best UK garage tracks released from 1995 to 2005" list. The music video shows the band in a cake shop and contains several double-entendres. A follow-up song, "Wink One Eye" was recorded but was never released. Background The song's title was inspired by the 1989 American made-for TV movie '' Baby Cakes'', which starred Ricki Lake in the title role. "B with Me" is a song by British girl group Mis-Teeq. It was written by band members Alesha Dixon, Su-Elise Nash, and Sabrina Washington along with Mushtaq for their debut album, ''Lickin' on Both Sides'' (2001). Rather than the album version, Grant Nelson's Bump & Flex garage remix of the song was chosen as the fourth single from the album. It reached number five on the UK Singles Chart. Jeremy Sylvester
Club Asylum is the name of UK garage musician Jeremy Sylvester. They were originally a duo which consisted of Sylvester and Paul Emanuel. After the duo decided to go their separate ways, Sylvester continued to produce and remix under the Club Asylum moniker as a solo artist, and is still active to the present day. Biography Sylvester and Emanuel first met during the early days of the UK garage scene at the London-based house and garage label Nice 'N' Ripe. The duo scored their first chart entry in 1998 with "Freek Me Up", a bootleg vinyl release of the Jodeci song " Freek'n You", which reached No. 92 on the UK Singles Chart. "Anytime" is a song by Nu-Birth, an alias of UK garage duo 187 Lockdown. The song features Janette Sewell on vocals. It was first released in 1996 on Nu Jak Recordings then as an official single in 1997 via XL Recordings/ Locked On, reaching No. 48 on the UK Singles Chart.
