Treasurer Of The Law Society Of Ontario
The Law Society of Ontario (LSO; french: Barreau de l'Ontario) is the law society responsible for the self-regulation of lawyers and paralegals in the Canadian province of Ontario. Founded in 1797 as the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC; french: link=no, Barreau du Haut-Canada), its name was changed by statute in 2018. History The Law Society of Upper Canada was established in 1797 to regulate the legal profession in the British colony of Upper Canada and is the oldest self-governing body in North America. The Society governed the legal profession in the coterminous Canada West from 1841 to 1867, and in Ontario since Confederation in 1867. The Law Society was authorized, although not created, by the ''Act for the better regulating of the practice of the law'', a 1797 statute. John Godfrey Spragge
John Godfrey Spragge (September 6, 1806 – April 20, 1884) was a Canadian lawyer and judge. Born in New Cross, Lewisham, England, he emigrated to Upper Canada in 1820 with his father, Joseph Spragge. He was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1828 and practised law in York (now Toronto). In May 1881, he was appointed chief justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario (the title was changed later in the year to chief justice of Ontario). He served until his death in 1884. Spragge as a justice on Ontario Court of Appeal presided over ''McLaren v Caldwell'' where he held that Ontario law made all streams, whether naturally or artificially floatable, public waterways. Newton Rowell
Newton Wesley Rowell, (November 1, 1867 – November 22, 1941) was a Canadian lawyer, politician and judge, as well as a lay leader in the Methodist Church. Rowell led the Ontario Liberal Party from 1911 to 1917 and put forward a platform advocating temperance. Rowell's Liberals failed to oppose the Whitney government's passage of Regulation 17 which restricted the teaching of the French language in schools and alienated the province's French-Canadian minority. Life and career Rowell was born in London Township, Ontario. He ran for the House of Commons of Canada in the 1900 federal election but was defeated in York East. Returning to his law practice, Rowell was made King's Counsel in 1902. He became senior partner in his law firm (Rowell, Reid, and Wood) and had a prominent legal career. Wallace Nesbitt
Wallace Nesbitt, (May 13, 1858 – April 7, 1930) was a Canadian lawyer and puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Born in Woodstock, Canada West (now Ontario), the son of John W. Nesbitt and Mary Wallace, he was called to the Ontario Bar in 1881. A practising lawyer, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1903. He served for two years until he resigned in 1905. Nesbitt served as the president of the Ontario Bar Association from 1923 to 1927, and as national president of the Canadian Bar Association from 1928 to 1929. Featherston Osler
Featherston Osler (January 4, 1838January 16, 1924) was a Canadian judge. He sat on Ontario's court of common pleas from 1879 to 1883 and on the Court of Appeal for Ontario from 1883 to his retirement in March 1910. Featherston Osler was born in Newmarket, Ontario, on January 4, 1838, to Ellen Tree (Picton) Osler and Featherstone Lake Osler, an Anglican cleric. He attended grammar schools in Barrie and Bradford West Gwillimbury, Bond Head and Trinity College, Toronto. William Osler, Britton Bath Osler, and Edmund Boyd Osler (Ontario politician), Edmund Boyd Osler were his siblings. Osler was called to the bar of Ontario in 1860, was created a King's Counsel in 1879, and practised in Toronto before his appointment to the Court of Common Pleas on March 5, 1879. John Hoskin
John Hoskin (1921–1990) was a British sculptor from Cheltenham. He began drawing when he returned from Germany after serving in the Second World War. Terry Frost, a painter from the St. Ives school encouraged him to become a sculptor. John while working as an architect's draftsman but longing to become an artist, knew of the group working in St.Ives and decided to hitch-hike there one day. By a remarkable co-incidence, he was picked up and given a lift by Terry. By the time they arrived, John knew being a sculptor was his destiny. It was he that said "as if up until that journey my life had been playing out of tune." He began sculpting in the early 1950s, working with metal. His works combined shiny curved surfaces with contrasting black welded comb of rods that held them together, a conflict of geometric and organic forms. Sir Æmilius Irving (February 4, 1823 – November 27, 1913) was a Canadians, Canadian lawyer and politician. Born in Leamington Spa, Leamington, England, son of The Hon. Jacob Æmilius Irving and Catherine, daughter of Jeremiah Homfray, Sir Jere Homfray, of Llandaff House. He was educated at Upper Canada College, became a barrister in 1849, and was created a Queen's Counsel in 1863. In 1851, he married Augusta Gugy, the daughter of Bartholomew Gugy, Bartholomew Conrad Augustus Gugy. He was a Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal Member of the House of Commons of Canada for Hamilton (electoral district), Hamilton in the 3rd Canadian Parliament. Irving served as clerk of the peace for Waterloo County, Ontario, Waterloo County and was List of Treasurers of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada from 1893 to 1913. Edward Blake
Dominick Edward Blake (October 13, 1833 – March 1, 1912), known as Edward Blake, was the second premier of Ontario, from 1871 to 1872 and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 1880 to 1887.
