The award is to recognise a musician who has had a profound effect on the traditional Irish music world and promoted traditional music in a positive way. Gradam Ceoil TG4
TG4's Gradam Ceoil was set up in 1998 with the purpose of recognising the various musicians and organisations who are significant in the creation of Irish Traditional music and in developing both the music and other musicians in Ireland and around the world. It is considered the premier Traditional Irish Music Award event. The awards are annual, given at a concert which highlights the recipients and is broadcast live on TG4. It is considered that channel's flagship event. Judges The judging panel is made up of experts in traditional music. Ben Lennon
Ben Lennon (born 5 July 1995) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was an under-18 All Australian before becoming a first round AFL draft pick in 2013. Lennon played 21 matches with Richmond over a four-year stint at the club before being delisted, quitting the sport and taking up a scholarship offer to play American football at the University of Utah in the United States, later moving to Bethune–Cookman University. Early life and junior football Lennon first played football at Under 9 level, at his local club Macleod. In 2012 Lennon began playing with the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup. During the 2013 TAC Cup season Lennon had a season average of 24.7 disposals and 7.1 marks per game. He also kicked 10 goals in his seven matches for the season. Dónal Lunny
Dónal Lunny (born 10 March 1947) is an Irish folk musician and producer. He plays left-handed guitar and bouzouki, as well as keyboards and bodhrán. As a founding member of popular bands Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, Coolfin, Mozaik, LAPD, and Usher's Island, he has been at the forefront of the renaissance of Irish traditional music for over five decades. Lunny is the brother of musician and producer Manus Lunny. He had a son, Shane, with singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor; Shane was found dead on 7 January 2022, aged 17. Early life Lunny was born on 10 March 1947 in Tullamore. Arty McGlynn
Arty McGlynn (7 August 1944 – 18 December 2019) was an Irish guitarist born in Omagh, County Tyrone. In addition to his solo work, he collaborated with different notable groups such as Patrick Street, Planxty, Four Men and a Dog, De Dannan and the Van Morrison Band. He played guitar on the critically acclaimed 1989 Van Morrison album, ''Avalon Sunset''. Bobby Gardiner
Bobby Gardiner (born 1939) is an Irish accordionist and lilting, lilter. He was recruited by Micheal O'Suilleabhain to the Music Department in University College Cork where he has been teaching traditional music for the last 25 years. Biography Bobby Gardiner was born in Aughdarra, Lisdoonvarna, the Burren area of County Clare. His Mother, Dilly, played a German two- row concertina and from her he learned his first tune – the fling What the devil ails you? His brother introduced him to a new Hohner two-row button accordion and after that, Bobby bought a grey Paolo Soprani accordion. Michael Tubridy
Michael "Mick" Tubridy (born 1935 at Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland) is an Irish musician, step dancer and structural engineer. Career In November 1962, he was a founder member of the traditional Irish music group, The Chieftains, with whom he played the tin whistle, Irish flute, and concertina; he remained a member of the group until 1979. In 1998 he published "A Selection of Irish Traditional Step Dances," a guide to ''sean nós'' (old-style) step dancing in which he recorded the steps of renowned Clare dancing masters James Keane and Dan Furey using a system of notation of his own invention. He is a member of the Craobh Naithí branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and contributed to the publication of two books of Irish traditional tunes for the branch. He worked as a structural engineer until his retirement in 1993.
