Syria
Syria ( ar, سُورِيَا or سُورِيَة, translit=Sūriyā), officially the Syrian Arab Republic ( ar, الجمهورية العربية السورية, al-Jumhūrīyah al-ʻArabīyah as-Sūrīyah), is a Western Asian country located in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant. Nazem Al-Jaafari
Nazem al-Jaafari ( ar, ناظم الجعفري) (born 1918 in Damascus, Syria – 2015) was considered the founder of impressionism in Syria. Sara Shamma
Sara Shamma ( ar, سارة شمّة) (born 26 November 1975) is a UK-based Syrian artist whose paintings are figurative in style. The importance of storytelling and narrative is paramount in her work. Shamma has a long-standing interest in the psychology associated with the suffering of individuals and has made work on the subject of war, modern slavery and human trafficking. Her works can be divided into series that reflect prolonged periods of research. Professional career Shamma, was born in Damascus, Syria (1975) to a Syrian father and Lebanese mother. She graduated from the Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Damascus in 1998. Kais Salman
Kais Salman (born 1976) is a Syrian painter, based in Damascus. His technique has been described as "monochromatic, abstract expressionism," and a departure from the work done by previous generations of Syrian painters, who had been more influenced by Soviet art. Hurufiyya Movement
The Hurufiyya movement ( ar, حروفية ''ḥurufiyyah'', adjectival form ''ḥurufī'', 'letters' (of the alphabet)) is an aesthetic movement that emerged in the second half of the twentieth century amongst Muslim artists, who used their understanding of traditional Islamic calligraphy within the precepts of modern art. By combining tradition and modernity, these artists worked towards developing a culture specific visual language, which instilled a sense of national identity in their respective nation states, at a time when many of these states where shaking off colonial rule and asserting their independence. They adopted the same name as the Hurufi, an approach of Sufism which emerged in the late 14th–early 15th century. Art historian Sandra Dagher has described Hurufiyya as the most important movement to emerge in Arabic art in the 20th century. Khairat Al-Saleh
Khairat Al-Saleh, born in Jerusalem and educated in Syria and Egypt, is a noted painter in the Hurufiyya movement and a ceramicist, glassmaker and printmaker. Life and career Khairat Al-Saleh was born in Jerusalem in 1940. She was educated at the University of Wales Swansea, where she studied English literature and poetry and works as a ceramist, glassmaker, printmaker and painter living between England and Syria. She is noted for her use of calligraphy and miniatures. Inspired by Arab and Islamic art, she experimented with the art of illuminated manuscripts, arabesque and geometric design in her paintings, prints and ceramics. As a poet, her work is closely linked to illumination, illustration and the art of the book. Nazir Nabaa
Nazir Nabaa ( ar, نذير نبعة) (born 1938 in Damascus, Syria) was a Syrian painter. Considered a pioneer of modern Syrian art, he studied art at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo in Cairo from 1959 to 1965 during the time of the United Arab Republic. He continued his training at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1971 to 1974. After completing his studies he returned to Damascus and joined the faculty of the College of Fine Arts at Damascus University. Nabaa's style is noted for blending together ancient visual culture with modern themes, and his work has been shown in exhibitions at museums such as the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. Modern Art
Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the styles and philosophies of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Fateh Moudarres
Fateh al-Moudarres ( ar, فاتح المدرس; 1922–1999) was a Syrian painter and one of the leaders of the modern art movement in Syria. Moudarres studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where he was influenced by Surrealism. After he completed his studies, he returned to Syria where he developed his skills under the auspices of long-time friend, mentor, and tutor Wahbi Al-Hariri. Roland Khoury
Roland Khoury ( ar, رولان خوري) (1930—1988) was a Syrian painter. Biography Khoury was born in Antioch in 1930. He moved to Aleppo where he finished his college in 1950, afterwards worked as a teacher in Syria until 1955, when he left to go to Italy to study painting at Accademia di belle arti di Roma in 1956 from which he graduated on 1960. In 1962 he won the first prize of San Vito Romano's (Provincial Agency for Tourism in Rome) Contest & Exhibition in Italy. In 1963 he represented Syria at the International exhibition which took place in "Galleria d'Arte d'Urso" Siena – Italy. Khaled Al-Khani
Khaled al-Khani (born 17 February 1975 in Hama, Syria) is a Syrian painter, currently living in Paris. Following the Syrian revolt, he has made manifest his anti-regime stance. Work Al-Khani is an artist whose works include oil painting and mural painting. His work focuses on people, whether individuals or groups, as well as women. Some have compared his artistry to the German Expressionist movement beginning before the period of the First World War, such as Otto Dix. Memories of the conflict in Syria have a profound influence on al-Khani's work.
