Sri Lankan Canadian
Sri Lankan Canadians refers to people from Sri Lanka who have arrived and settled in Canada. Among these immigrants include members from the Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Malay and Burgher ethnicities. According to the 2021 census there are 136,240 Sri Lankan-born persons in Canada. Demographics Sri Lankan Canadians are concentrated in the cities of Toronto (Malvern) and Montreal. According to the 2001 census, there are 62,000 Canadians who claim Sri Lankan ancestry, but only 10,000 claimed to be of Sinhalese ancestry. The number may not be an actual representation because many Tamil Canadians from Sri Lanka classify themselves as Tamil rather than Sri Lankan. Kumaravelu Vignarajah (also ''Nishanthan'' to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE or Tamil Tigers), ''Chandran'' to Sri Lankan military intelligenceJansz, Frederica. Rathika Sitsabaiesan
Rathika Sitsabaiesan (; born December 23, 1981) is a Canadian former politician who was the member of Parliament (MP) for Scarborough—Rouge River from 2011 to 2015 as a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP). Sitsabaiesan is the first Tamil to be elected to the House of Commons. Early life Rathika Sitsabaiesan was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka on December 23, 1981. She has three elder sisters. Sitsabaiesan and her family emigrated to Canada when she was five. Sitsabaiesan grew up in Mississauga, west of Toronto. When her father was disabled following a workplace accident, her mother had to give up her nursing studies to work in a warehouse to support the family. Sathiyasangaree "Gary" Anandasangaree ( ta, சத்தியசங்கரி ஆனந்தசங்கரி) is a Sri Lankan Tamil Canadian lawyer, human rights activist and politician. He was elected to represent the riding of Scarborough—Rouge Park in the House of Commons in the 2015 federal election. Early life and family Anandasangaree is the son of V. Anandasangaree, a leading Sri Lankan Tamil politician. His parents separated in 1980 and he and his mother moved to Ireland. They had planned to return to Sri Lanka in July 1983 when the Black July anti-Tamil riots broke out. Changing plans, Anandasangaree and his mother travelled to Canada on August 31, 1983. Formerly co-anchor of CIII-DT, Global Toronto's 6 p.m. ''News Hour'', she was hired in September 2009 by the CBC News Network.
