Sri Lankan American
Sri Lankan Americans ( si, script=latn, Sri Lankika Amerikanu, ta, script=latn, Ilangkaī Amerikan) are Americans of full or partial Sri Lankan diaspora, Sri Lankan ancestry. Sri Lankan Americans are persons of Sri Lankan origin from various Sri Lankan ethnic backgrounds. The people are classified as South Asian in origin. History Sri Lankans started arriving in the U.S. around the mid 1950s in larger numbers, but there is evidence from U.S. census records of Sri Lankans having arrived in earlier years from Dominion of Ceylon, Ceylon mostly between the 1880s and 1890s. In 1975, Sri Lankan immigrants were classified for the first time as belonging to a category separate from "other Asian (U.S. Census), Asian". In that year, 432 Sri Lankans entered the United States. According to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service records, in 1996, 1,277 Sri Lankans were naturalized. Nalin Samarasinha
Nalin H. Samarasinha (born 1958) is a Sri Lankan born planetary scientist and a discoverer of minor planets, who studies the dynamical evolution and processes of cometary nuclei and comae. Currently, he works as a senior scientist for the Planetary Science Institute in the United States. Early life Samarasinha earned a BSc first class honours in Physics from University of Colombo after schooling at Hena Vidyalaya, Mt. Lavinia and Nalanda College Colombo. Later he gained a MSc in astronomy from University of Maryland, College Park USA and followed it up furthering studies graduating with a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Maryland. Discoveries and honours Florian asteroid 12871 Samarasinha (), discovered by astronomers with the LONEOS survey in 1998, was named in his honor. Namal Nawana (born 1970/1971) is an Australian businessman, and former chief executive (CEO) of Smith & Nephew plc, a British multinational medical equipment manufacturing company. Anne Cherubim
Anne Cherubim is a Canadian artist residing in the U.S., who is an abstract contemporary landscape painter. Cherubim was born in Canada and later started a family in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She is a Resident Artist at Artists & Makers Studios in Rockville, Maryland, and a member of the Gaithersburg Artist Collective. Artwork Cherubim works predominantly in acrylic. Her artwork is also generally abstract in nature, although it is rooted in real life images and textures. Cherubim notes that "an underlying thread in much of her work is the environment and stewardship of the planet."
