List Of South Carolina Union Civil War Units
The following is a list of Union Army regiments raised in South Carolina during the American Civil War. Only African-American units were raised in the state. Four complete regiments were organized and mustered into service; Union authorities planned to raise a fifth regiment but instead transferred the recruits to the other regiments. Union Army
During the American Civil War, the Union Army, also known as the Federal Army and the Northern Army, referring to the United States Army, was the land force that fought to preserve the Union of the collective states. It proved essential to the preservation of the United States as a working, viable republic. The Union Army was made up of the permanent regular army of the United States, but further fortified, augmented, and strengthened by the many temporary units of dedicated volunteers, as well as including those who were drafted in to service as conscripts. To this end, the Union Army fought and ultimately triumphed over the efforts of the Confederate States Army in the American Civil War. Over the course of the war, 2,128,948 men enlisted in the Union Army, including 178,895 colored troops; 25% of the white men who served were immigrants, and further 25% were first generation Americans.McPherson, pp.36–37. 21st United States Colored Infantry Regiment
The 21st United States Colored Infantry Regiment was a U.S.C.T. infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized from the 3rd South Carolina Infantry (African Descent) and the 4th South Carolina Infantry (African Descent) in March 1864 under the command of Col. Milton S. Littlefield. It served in South Carolina and Georgia until the end of the war; it was mustered out in October 1866. United States Colored Troops
The United States Colored Troops (USCT) were regiments in the United States Army composed primarily of African-American ( colored) soldiers, although members of other minority groups also served within the units. They were first recruited during the American Civil War, and by the end of the war in 1865, the 175 USCT regiments constituted about one-tenth of the manpower of the Union Army. About 20% of USCT soldiers died, a rate about 35% higher than that of white Union troops. Many USCT soldiers fought with distinction, with 16 receiving the Medal of Honor and numerous others receiving other honors. The 4th Regiment South Carolina Volunteer Infantry (Colored) was an African-American infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 3rd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Reigiment (Colored) was an infantry regiment of African-American in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 3rd South Carolina Infantry was organized at Hilton Head, South Carolina and mustered into Federal service in June 1863. The unit was on post duty at Hilton Head until it was moved to Jacksonville, Florida in February 1864. There was a protest over pay as soldiers lay down their rifles to protest receiving half the pay of white soldiers. Senator Henry Wilson of Massachusetts mentioned the incident during a debate in Congress over the pay of African-American Union soldiers: Colonel Augustus G. Bennett was the commanding officer. 34th United States Colored Infantry Regiment
The 34th United States Colored Infantry was a U.S.C.T. infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was re-organized from the 2nd South Carolina Infantry (African Descent) in February 1864. It was assigned to various posts in Florida and South Carolina, and took part in the Battle of Honey Hill in November 1864. It was mustered out on February 28, 1866. One officer, George W. 2nd Regiment South Carolina Volunteer Infantry (African Descent)
The 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Colored) was an African-American infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was among the scores of units raised starting in the middle of the war to augment Federal troop strength by tapping into the large Southern population of former slaves. The regiment, accompanied by Harriet Tubman, participated in the Raid at Combahee Ferry in which roughly 800 slaves were freed. It gained notoriety among certain quarters for its actions during the controversial looting and burning of the pro-Confederate town of Darien, Georgia. This operation was part of the Union strategy to damage the Confederate states' ability to supply food and materials towards their war effort.
