Serbian Canadians
The community of Serbian Canadians ( sr, Канадски Срби/Kanadski Srbi) includes Canadian citizens of Serb ethnicity, or people born in Serbia who permanently reside in Canada. Serbs (and Serbians) have migrated to Canada in various waves during the 20th century. Today there are five or more generations of Serbs in the country. The 2016 census recorded 96,530 people in Canada declaring themselves as "Serbian". Serbian Canadians generally belong to the Serbian Orthodox Church and follow the Eastern Orthodox tradition. History The first Serbs to arrive in Canada came to British Columbia in the 1850s. Many of them came from the state of California in the United States, while others directly emigrated from the Balkans. Alexander Zonjic
Alexander Zonjic (Serbian Cyrillic: Александар Зоњић; born April 30, 1951) is a flutist born in Windsor, Ontario, who performs both light jazz and classical compositions in the United States, based in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of a Greek mother and a Serbian émigré father who left the war-torn Yugoslavia before Tito's communists took over. He was educated in Windsor where he graduated from University of Windsor in 1975 and continued studying with Ervin Monroe, a distinguished first flutist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Anica Nonveiller
Anica Lazin Nonveiller (Serbian Cyrillic: Аница Лазин Нонвеје; born 1957) is a Serbian Canadian journalist, writer and producer. She is the sister of a Parisian theatre director Miloš Lazin. In 1991 she was fired from a state-owned Radio Belgrade for broadcasting a Croatian war song during the Yugoslav wars. After receiving death threats in 1992 she took refuge in France and latter moved with her family to Canada. Since 1996 she published political articles, essays and ''Tisza'' an autobiographical novel. She's the founder and director of the production house Aria that produces plays in Montreal that incorporates theatre, classical singing and political engagement. Dragan Todorović (Serbian Cyrillic: Драган Тодоровић; born September 1958 in Kragujevac, PR Serbia, FPR Yugoslavia) is a6h ujwriter and multimedia artist. Until 1995 he lived in Yugoslavia, where he worked as a journalist, editor, and television personality. Career Between 1977 and 1995 Todorović published over 2,000 articles (commentaries, interviews, essays and reports) in leading Yugoslav magazines. On radio, he worked as a host, writer and producer, among other things writing and directing 24 radio-plays for Radio Politika. He also made two TV documentaries and hosted over 150 TV shows. Lilly Otasevic ( sr-Cyrl, Лили Оташевић, born 1969) is a Serbian Canadian artist based in Toronto, whose large-scale sculptural works have been commissioned by several local governments in Ontario, Canada. Ecological concepts are frequently incorporated into her sculptures and also determine the materials being used. Career Although a trained painter, Otasevic's portfolio mainly consists of large-scale sculptures. She often focuses on environmental themes when designing public art works. Her "Mobius" monument has a looped shape which refers to the recycling logo, thereby underlining our relationship with nature. Molded from stainless steel, the sculptural work is found in downtown Toronto.
