This is a list of textile artists who were born in Scandinavia (including Finland), or whose artworks are closely associated with that region. The countries of Scandinavia have a long history of textile art, especially Sweden and Denmark. For centuries, country women created their own fabrics with designs which were often inspired by nature. By the early 20th century, artists became famous for their pile rugs while after the Second World War brightly coloured Scandinavian textile designs became popular across Europe and in the United States. Anna Boberg
Anna Katarina Boberg, née Scholander, (3 December 1864 – 27 January 1935) was a Swedish artist married to prominent architect Ferdinand Boberg. Anna Scholander was the daughter of architect Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander and the granddaughter of Axel Nyström. Boberg was a person of many artistic pursuits; initially she worked with ceramics and textiles (among other things she created "the Peacock vase" for Rörstrand) and besides painting she also worked with set design and writing, for example. She was of an artistic family, but never received any formal training in the arts, and is considered an autodidact. Many of her paintings are of northern Norway, which became Boberg's main focus for many years after a trip there in 1901. These works were not received very well in Sweden, but did much better in Paris. Merete Erbou Laurent
Merete Erbou Laurent (born 1949) is a Danish weaver and textile artist. Since the 1970s, she has specialized in weaving paper yarn to produce brightly coloured floor rugs, runners and carpets but more recently has used wool for her rugs. From 1983 to 2006, she was editor-in-chief of the Danish arts and crafts journal ''Dansk Kunsthåndværk'' and from 2011 to 2017 served as chair of the Danish designers' association Danske Kunsthåndværkere & Designere. Biography Born on 26 January 1949 in Randers, Merete Erbou Laurent is the daughter of Carsten Gylling Erbou (1923–1998), a farmer, and Helga Kirkegaard (born 1926). Annika Ekdahl
Annika Ekdahl (born 1955 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a textile artist who designs tapestries marrying Renaissance and Baroque practice with more modern techniques, creating large-scale works in her own contemporary style. She has exhibited in Europe and Australia and was the 2013 Nordic Textiles Awardee. Biography Annika Ekdahl was born in 1955 in Stockholm, Sweden where she spent her childhood. From 1978, she developed an interest in working with textiles. In the early 1980s, she moved to Blekinge and obtained a master's degree in textile art in 1994 from the HDK School of Design and Crafts of the University of Gothenburg. Fredrika Eleonora Von Düben
Fredrika Eleonora von Düben (December 17, 1738 – March 1, 1808) was a Swedish dilettante painter and embroidery artist Biography Fredrika Eleonora was born to Baron Joachim von Düben the Younger and Catharina Eleonora Temminck, daughter of Hendrik Temminck. Her father was a nephew of royal favourite Emerentia von Düben (1669–1743) and served as the cabinet secretary of Ulrika Eleonora, Queen of Sweden. In 1759, she married Count Nils Adam Bielke (1724-1792), who was previously married to her relative Ulrika Eleonora von Düben (1722–1758). Brita Drewsen
Brita Drewsen (1887–1983) was a Swedish artist and businesswoman who spent her working life in Denmark, creating household textiles and handicrafts. In 1925, working with the Danish entrepreneur Kaj Dessau, she designed the pioneering interiors of the Copenhagen household furnishings store, now Illums Bolighus, attracting international acclaim. In the 1930s, she collaborated with the weaver Gudrun Clemens, producing rugs, curtains and upholstery at "The Blue Factory" (Den blaa Fabrik) in Lyngby. Together with the designer Bjørn Wiinblad, she created furniture and arranged arts and crafts exhibitions there in the 1970s. Margrete Drejer
Margrete Tora Drejer (1889–1975) was a Danish painter and textile artist who is remembered for the important part she played in teaching the art and history of sewing and textile decoration to women of all ages. Her own creations include textiles for churches as well as flags and banners. Biography Born on 13 October 1889 in Copenhagen, Margrete Tora Drejer was the daughter of the timber merchant Jens Nielsen Drejer (1845–1914) and Marie Hansen (1859–1943). She was brought up in a home on Amager, where both her mother and her grandmother were skilled embroiderers. Ingrid Dessau
Ingrid Dessau, née ''Peterson'' (born 3 March 1923 in Svalöv, died 15 June 2000) was a Swedish textile artist. Work Ingrid Dessau was the daughter of the manager Victor Peterson and Anna-Stina Wallman. She was married 1949-1954 to the director Kaj Dessau (1897–1987), the founder of Illums Bolighus. She was the niece of Rudolf Petersson. She studied at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm and began her career at Kristianstads läns Hemslöjd, where her work involved documenting the county's textiles through watercolor paintings. She also designed patterns for rugs such as ryas. Her artistic breakthrough came in 1953 through a joint exhibition with Signe Persson-Melin at Galerie Moderne in Stockholm. Anna Christina Cronquist
Anna Christina Cronquist, née ''Lundgren'' (1807–1893), was a Swedish entrepreneur. She was the founder of the firm '' A.C. Cronquist & Son'', which was the start of the Cronquist Era within manufacture and Major appliance business in Malmö. Life Anna Christina Cronquist married in 1830 to Johan Cronquist (d. 1852), editor and publisher of the newspaper '' Malmö Nya Allehanda'' in Malmö. As the income from the paper was not sufficient to support a family, she gave lessons in weaving: skilled in the art, she published the possibly first instruction book in weaving in Swedish in 1845. Between 1849 and 1865, Cronquist managed a very successful textile shop, which became the biggest in Malmö and reputed in all Scania. Anna Casparsson
Anna Charlotta Sophia Casparsson (born Anna von Feilitzen) (10 October 1861 – 24 September 1961) was a Swedish textile artist, known for her embroidery. Born in Linköping, Casparsson was the daughter of Urban von Feilitzin. Trained as a pianist, she later, after her marriage to Edvard Casparsson, began producing embroidery, developing an unconventional technique incorporating beads, lace, and sequins. Her work was inspired by music, Bible stories, and folk stories, and by the work of Carl Jonas Love Almqvist and Ernst Josephson. She first showed work in 1945, and in 1960 was the subject of an exhibition at the Moderna Museet. She died in Saltsjöbaden. Bodil Cappelen
Bodil Cappelen (born April 26, 1930) is a Norwegian painter, textile artist, and book illustrator. She has also written children's books. Early life Cappelen was born in Stavanger, the daughter of Johan Munthe Cappelen from Oslo and Edith Heiberg from Leikanger. Her father was a judge and was known for his dissenting opinion in the acquittal of Police Chief Knut Rød after the Second World War. Bodil grew up with two sisters: Lotte Cappelen Thiis and Eli Heiberg. She attended the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1948 to 1951.
