List Of Roman Catholic Dioceses In Belgium
A diocese, also known as a bishopric, is an administrative unit under the supervision of a bishop, of which there are currently 8 in the Belgian Catholic Church. The 8 dioceses are divided into 1 ecclesiastical province and 7 suffragan dioceses, but also one military ordinariate, which was created a military vicariate in 1957, but elevated to a military ordinariate in 1986. Its seat is located at the Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg. Since December 1961, following the restructuring of the Catholic dioceses in Belgium, the Archdiocese of Mechelen was renamed the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. This newly created archdiocese is the primatial see of Belgium and the centre of the ecclesiastical province governed by the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels, which covers the whole of Belgium. Provinces Of Belgium
The Kingdom of Belgium is divided into three regions. Two of these regions, Flanders and Wallonia, are each subdivided into five provinces. The third region, Brussels, does not belong to any province and nor is it subdivided into provinces. Instead, it has amalgamated both regional and provincial functions into a single "Capital Region" administration. Most of the provinces take their name from earlier duchies and counties of similar location, while their territory is mostly based on the departments installed during French annexation. The Diocese of Ghent (Latin: ''Dioecesis Gandavensis'') is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Belgium. It is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. The patron of the diocese is Saint Bavo of Ghent. History The diocese was erected in 1559 by papal bull ''Super universitas'' to become independent of the Diocese of Tournai. Ghent had an important local administration and was the location of the Abbey of Saint Bavo, founded by Saint Amandus. However, this abbey was suppressed and the canons were removed, moving to the collegiate church of Saint John, and it changed its name to Saint Bavo. Patrick Hoogmartens
Patrick Hoogmartens (born 1952) is a Belgian prelate of the Catholic Church who has served as the third bishop of the Diocese of Hasselt since 2004. Life Hoogmartens was born in Tongeren on 19 May 1952 and was educated at schools in the city. He studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, graduating licentiate in Law (1977) and Philosophy (1978). He then entered the seminary, where he studied Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood on 4 July 1982 in the Basilica of Our Lady, Tongeren, and undertook further studies at the Alphonsian Academy, graduating Licentiate of Sacred Theology. On 1 September 1989 he was appointed president of the Major Seminary in Hasselt. On 8 July 1997 Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop of Hasselt. He was consecrated bishop in Hasselt Cathedral on 26 October 1997. Lodewijk Aerts
Lode Aerts (born 2 October 1959), identified also as Lodewijk Aerts, is a Belgian prelate of the Catholic Church who has been Bishop of Bruges since December 2016. Biography Lode Aerts is a native of Geraardsbergen, diocese of Ghent. He attended secondary school in Eeklo and entered the Diocesan Seminary in Ghent in 1977. He studied philosophy at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Theology at the diocesan seminary. He was ordained priest on 7 July 1984 and in 1988 obtained a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He taught at the seminary in Ghent from 1988 to 2002, when he became a canon of St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, and the diocesan vicar for vocations. In the summer of 2016 he became dean of Ghent Cathedral. The Diocese of Bruges (in Dutch Bisdom Brugge) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Belgium. Johan Jozef Bonny (Born 10 July 1955) is the 22nd Bishop of Antwerp, Belgium. Biography Johan Bonny was born in Moere (Gistel) in 1955. He is the oldest of five children from a farmer's family. He is the son of Gustaaf Bonny and Marie-Jeanne Lootens. He went through primary school in Eernegem and Moere. The Cathedral of Our Lady ( nl, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Antwerp, Belgium.
