Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral
The Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral ( es, Catedral Metropolitana de Montevideo) is the main Roman Catholic church of Montevideo, and seat of its archdiocese. It is located right in front of the Cabildo across Constitution Square, in the neighbourhood of Ciudad Vieja. History The origin of the church dates from Spanish colonial times (1740), when a church constructed of brick was built on the site. In 1790, the foundation was laid for the construction of the current neoclassical structure. The church was consecrated in 1804; it is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and to the patron saints of Montevideo, Philip and James. There is one major altar, several side altars, memorials, and tombs of several of the former archbishops and bishops who served in the cathedral. On a side altar is venerated an image of the Virgin of the Thirty-Three, patron saint of Uruguay. Surp Nerses Shnorhali Cathedral ( es, Iglesia Apostólica Armenia San Nerses Shnorhali; hy, Սուրբ Ներսէս Շնորհալի եկեղեցի) is an Armenian Apostolic church in the neighbourhood of Bella Vista, Montevideo, Uruguay. This temple, dedicated to the Catholicos saint Nerses Shnorhali, is the prelacy of the Uruguayan Diocese of the Armenian Holy Apostolic Church. Its current head is Archbishop Hakob Glnjian. The church is part of a bigger ensemble of buildings that house Armenian-Uruguayan institutions. There is a memorial to the Armenian genocide, with a sculpture by Nerses Ounanian. The Cathedral of The Most Holy Trinity ( es, Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad), popularly known as "Templo Inglés", is an Anglican church in Montevideo, Uruguay. Overview The original temple dates back to the 1830s and was built directly on the seashore. It was made possible through the sole effort of Samuel Fisher Lafone. At the beginning of the 20th century it was re-built on its current location, due to the modern development of the Rambla of Montevideo. The Anglican Church of South America ( es, Iglesia Anglicana de Sudamérica) is the ecclesiastical province of the Anglican Communion that covers six dioceses in the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. San José de Mayo () is the capital city of the San José Department in southern Uruguay. Location and geography The city is located at the centre of the state, on the intersection of Route 3 with Route 11, from the centre of Montevideo.
