American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. Points are scored primarily by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent's goalposts for a field goal. Wes Bradshaw
Wesley Walker Bradshaw (November 26, 1897 – April 10, 1960) was an American football player and coach. He was an All- Southwest Conference (SWC) back at Baylor University and was the first Southwest Conference football player to score 100 points in a single season with 119 points scored during the 1922 college football season. He earned the nickname of "Rabbit" for his running style on the field. "On the football field, he was one of the hardest guys to get hold of I ever saw. He wasn't great as a fast runner, but he was very shifty and had a great change of pace. He was very hard to catch," said Southern Methodist University player James Stewart. George Dahlgren
George Arthur Dahlgren (April 17, 1887 – January 16, 1940) was a football player in the National Football League. Dahlgren was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was the eldest son of Edwin Dahlgren, who was born in Sweden, and Pauline, who was an immigrant from Norway. Frank Coughlin
Francis Edward Coughlin (February 28, 1896 – September 8, 1951) was an American football player and coach. Biography War and college football During World War I, Coughlin served in the United States Navy aboard a minesweeper. After the war, he played at the collegiate level at the University of Notre Dame. He was named captain of the 1920 football squad after the team's current captain, George Gipp withdrew from the University. NFL career For the 1921 season, Coughlin was named as a player-coach for the Rock Island Independents of the American Professional Football Association, which was renamed the National Football League in 1922. James Gleason Dunn Conzelman (March 6, 1898 – July 31, 1970) was an American football player and coach, baseball executive, and advertising executive. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1964 and was selected in 1969 as a quarterback on the National Football League 1920s All-Decade Team. Walter M. Clago (June 28, 1899 – January 16, 1955) was an American football end who played two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Tigers (1921) and Rock Island Independents (1922). He played college football for the University of Detroit Titans football team in 1919 and also served in the United States Army (1916–1919), Detroit Police Department (1920–1945), and Pima County Sheriff's Department (1951–1955). Fred Samuel “Chick” Slepica, a.k.a. “Fred Chicken” (1888-1968) was a professional football, baseball, and basketball player. Playing career High School A Minneapolis North athlete, Chicken played football, basketball, and baseball for the high school. He was the star halfback of the 1907 undefeated and unscored upon Minneapolis North High School National Football Champions of the US. They had defeated the Oak Park, Illinois football team, another undefeated and unscored upon team, to claim that title. Miles Webster "Mike" Casteel (December 30, 1895 – March 27, 1977) was an American football player and coach. He played college football as the quarterback at Kalamazoo College and also played one season in the National Football League (NFL) for the Rock Island Independents.
