List Of RLM Aircraft Designations
This is a list of aircraft type numbers allocated by an institution under the direction of ''Heereswaffenamt'' (before May 1933) and the Reich Air Ministry (RLM) between 1933 and 1945 for German military and civilian aircraft and in parallel to the list of German aircraft engines. See RLM aircraft designation system for an explanation of how these numbers were used. There is no single "master list" applicable all the way from 1933 to 1945 - numbers were occasionally duplicated, reallocated, or re-used. Sources differ on the allocations. ''Waffenamt'' (WaA) was the German Army Weapons Agency. It was the centre for research and development of the Weimar Republic and later the Third Reich for weapons, ammunition and army equipment to the German Reichswehr and then Wehrmacht The ''Wehrmacht'' (, ) were the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945. Dornier Do 15
The Dornier Do Y was a German bomber of the 1930s, the second bomber design by Dornier Flugzeugwerke. Development Design on the aircraft began in 1930, to follow up from the other Dornier bomber prototype, the Dornier Do P. The first aircraft flew on 17 October 1931. It was a shoulder-wing monoplane of all-metal construction with fixed tailwheel landing gear, similar to the Do P, however this model had three engines instead of four. A civil transport version was proposed as the Dornier Do U, but this was never produced. Operational history The Do P and Do Y were displayed in the early 1930s as freighter prototypes; they were in fact evolutionary steps towards creating the Luftwaffe's first operational bomber, the Dornier Do 11a. Two examples were produced for the Royal Yugoslav Air Force in 1931, followed by two more machines six years later. Klemm L 25, later Klemm Kl 25 was a successful German light leisure, sports and training monoplane aircraft, developed in 1928. More than 600 aircraft were built, and manufacturing licenses were sold to the United Kingdom and the United States. Dornier Do 24
The Dornier Do 24 is a 1930s German three-engine flying boat designed by the Dornier Flugzeugwerke for maritime patrol and search and rescue. A total of 279 were built among several factories from 1937 to 1945. Design and development The Dornier Do 24 was designed to meet a Royal Netherlands Navy requirement for a replacement of the Dornier Wals being used in the Dutch East Indies, with the Netherlands government signing a contract for six Dornier Do 24s on 3 August 1936. Dornier Do 23
The Dornier Do 23 was a German medium bomber of the 1930s. Design and development The earlier Do 11 had exhibited several problems, so two initiatives were launched to address those shortcomings. The first resulted in the Do 13. The second effort was a more extensive rework which resulted in the Do 23. With additional landing flaps at the rear of the wings several of the handling problems were corrected, but crew and military equipment were analogous to the Do 11 and performance was still considered mediocre. Between 1934 and 1935 282 Dornier Do 23s were built for the ''Luftwaffe'' of which 273 were assigned to the units. Dornier Do 22
The Dornier Do 22 was a German seaplane, developed in the 1930s. Despite good performance, it was built only in small numbers and entirely for the export market. The type was operated in the Second World War by Finland, Greece and Yugoslavia. Dornier Do 20
The Dornier Do 20 was a proposed commercial flying boat designed in the mid-1930s. It was envisaged as an improved and enlarged version of the Dornier Do X ''Flugschiff'' (flying ship) that first flew in 1929. The Do X was not entirely successful, being under-powered despite using six pairs of engines mounted above the wing, and only three were built. Dornier proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the Do X by replacing the pylon-mounted engines with four pairs of diesel engines each of about 1,000 horse power, each pair fitted into a nacelle fared into the leading edge of the wing and driving one of the aircraft's four propellers. Dornier Do 19
The Dornier Do 19 was a German four-engine heavy bomber that first flew on 28 October 1936. Only one prototype flew, and it was converted to a transport in 1938. The other two were scrapped. The ''Luftwaffe'' had a shortcoming in the lack of an efficient heavy bomber fleet. ''Generalleutnant'' Walther Wever, the ''Luftwaffe''s first Chief of Staff, was the most persistent advocate of a German long-range strategic bomber fleet. It was built for the ''Luftwaffe''s Ural bomber program under General Wever, competing against the Junkers Ju 89. The RLM ''Technisches Amt'' issued a specification for a four-engine heavy bomber. The Dornier Do 18 was a development of the Do 16 flying boat. It was developed for the ''Luftwaffe'', but ''Luft Hansa'' received five aircraft and used these for tests between the Azores and the North American continent in 1936 and on their mail route over the South Atlantic from 1937 to 1939. The Dornier Do 17 is a twin-engined light bomber produced by Dornier Flugzeugwerke for the German Luftwaffe during World War II. Dornier Do J Wal
The Dornier Do J ''Wal'' ("whale") is a twin-engine German flying boat of the 1920s designed by ''Dornier Flugzeugwerke''. The Do J was designated the Do 16 by the Reich Air Ministry (''RLM'') under its aircraft designation system of 1933.
