This is a list of Academy Award winners and nominees whose career and identification are associated predominantly with Poland. The list is current as of the 94th Academy Awards nominations. There were eight Academy Awards given to Polish filmmakers for their work, including one Honorary Academy Award. The cinematographer Janusz Kamiński is the most awarded Polish filmmaker. The director Roman Polański won an Oscar and was nominated four more times (additionally, ''Knife in the Water'', a film directed and written by him, was also nominated). Academy Award
The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit for the American and international film industry. The awards are regarded by many as the most prestigious, significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide. Given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements, as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette as a trophy, officially called the "Academy Award of Merit", although more commonly referred to by its nickname, the "Oscar". The statuette, depicting a knight rendered in the Art Deco style, was originally sculpted by Los Angeles artist George Stanley from a design sketch by art director Cedric Gibbons. Maleficent (film)
''Maleficent'' is a 2014 American fantasy film directed by Robert Stromberg from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. The film stars Angelina Jolie as the title character, with Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville in supporting roles. Loosely inspired by Charles Perrault's original fairy tale, the film is a live action retelling of Walt Disney's 1959 animated film ''Sleeping Beauty'', and portrays the story from the perspective of the eponymous antagonist, depicting her conflicted relationship with the king and princess of a corrupt kingdom. Ryszard Lenczewski
Ryszard Lenczewski (; born 5 June 1948) is a Polish film and television cinematographer with more than thirty feature film credits. Lenczewski has been the cinematographer for four of director Paweł Pawlikowski's feature films. His work (with Łukasz Żal) on Pawlikowski's ''Ida'' (2014) has been widely recognized, garnering nominations for both the Academy Award and the BAFTA Award. Biography In 1974 he graduated from the Cinematography Department of the National Film School in Łódź. In 2005 he obtained a postdoctoral degree in film art, and on 7 October 2010 he was awarded the title of professor. From 2008-2014 he was the deputy dean of the Cinematography Department at the National Film School in Łódź. He has been a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the European Film Academy and since 2015 the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Łukasz Żal
Łukasz Żal (; born 24 June 1981) is a Polish cinematographer, best known for his work on the films ''Ida'' (2014), ''Loving Vincent'' (2017) and ''Cold War'' (2018). Life and career Żal has said that he "fell in love" with cinema at the age of 16, when he attended a course on filmmaking held at a local gymnasium in his home town of Koszalin, Poland. His interest in photography was sparked by a friend, who asked to use him as a subject and also showed him how to use a camera. He went on to study photography at the Leon Schiller National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź, from which he graduated in 2007. Whilst there, he watched many films and decided to pursue a career as a cinematographer because of the "stronger emotional content" he observed in movies. When preparing to work on a film, Zal has stated that he reads though the script and tries "to find part of himself in the movie". Sławomir Idziak (; born 25 January 1945) is a Polish cinematographer and director who has worked on over forty Polish and foreign films. He is especially known for his collaboration with director Krzysztof Kieślowski as well as Ridley Scott and David Yates. In 2019, the American Society of Cinematographers included '' Three Colours: Blue'' shot by Idziak on the list of the best-photographed films of the 20th century.
