Johann Wilhelm Meigen
Johann Wilhelm Meigen (3 May 1764 – 11 July 1845) was a German entomologist famous for his pioneering work on Diptera. Life Early years Meigen was born in Solingen, the fifth of eight children of Johann Clemens Meigen and Sibylla Margaretha Bick. His parents, though not poor, were not wealthy either. They ran a small shop in Solingen. His paternal grandparents, however, owned an estate and hamlet with twenty houses. Adding to the rental income, Meigen's grandfather was a farmer and a guild mastercutler in Solingen. Two years after Meigen was born, his grandparents died and his parents moved to the family estate. This was already heavily indebted by the Seven Years' War, then bad crops and rash speculations forced the sale of the farm and the family moved back to Solingen. Meigen attended the town school but only for a short time. He had learned to read and write on his grandfather's estate and he read widely at home as well as taking an interest in natural history. Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer
Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer (31 May 1755 – 28 June 1829) was a German botanist and entomologist. He was born at Etzelwang in the Upper Palatinate and died at Hersbruck, near Nuremberg. He was the son of (the elder, 1729-1805), one of the most distinguished and productive of German bibliographers, whose ''Annales Typographici'' were published between 1793 and 1803.G.W. Panzer, ''Annales Typographici ab Artis Inventae Origine usque ad annum MDXXXVI'', 11 Vols (Impensis Joannis Eberhardi Zeh, Bibliopolae, Norimbergae 1793-1803). A physician, he practised at Hersbruck. A celebrated botanist, he had a very species-rich herbarium. Milan Chvála
Milan Chvála (1936, Prague – 2021) was a Czech Republic, Czech entomologist who specialised in Diptera. He was best known for his work on the Empidoidea''. He graduated at the Faculty of Science of the Charles University in Prague in 1960. Since 1991 he was vice dean of the Faculty of Science of the Charles University. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 1991. His personal collections of Empidoidea are now in the Hope Entomological Collections at the University of Oxford. Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt
Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt (20 May 1785 – 23 December 1874) was a Swedish naturalist who worked mainly on Diptera and Hymenoptera. Biography Zetterstedt studied at the University of Lund, where he was a pupil of Anders Jahan Retzius. He received the title of professor in 1822 and succeeded Carl Adolph Agardh as professor of botany and practical economy in 1836, retiring as emeritus in 1853. In 1831, he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He is best known as an entomologist. His collections of Scandinavian, Lapland and world Diptera and Orthoptera are in the Zoological Museum of the University of Lund. His students include Anders Gustaf Dahlbom.
