Women's water polo became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Olympics. Since then, the United States women's team has won six consecutive medals. There are thirty-five female athletes who have won two or more Olympic medals in water polo. Heather Petri and Brenda Villa of the United States are the only two female athletes to win four Olympic medals in water polo. Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. Danielle Woodhouse
Danielle Woodhouse (born 23 January 1969 in Perth) is an Australian water polo player from the gold medal squad of the 2000 Summer Olympics. She is the sister of Bridgette Ireland (Gusterson) who was captain of the 2000 Olympic Team. Along with Liz Weekes, Woodhouse was the goal keeper for the Australian team in 2000. Danielle is a Sports Physiotherapist working with elite water polo players residing in Perth with her husband and 2 children. Heather Moody
Heather Moody (born August 21, 1973 in Rexburg, Idaho) is an American water polo player, who won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She was team captain of the US Women's National Team that captured the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and the only member of the team not from California. Her position is center forward. Life Moody went to college at San Diego State University where she was a member of the Water Polo team. In 1999 and 2001, Heather was United States Water Polo Player of the Year. In June 2005, Bill Barnett resigned as coach of the U.S. women's water polo team because he couldn't come to terms on a contract. Julie Ertel
Julie Ertel (born Julie Swail on December 27, 1972) is an Americans, American water polo player who was the team captain of the US Women's National Team that captured the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She competed in the triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics taking 19th place crossing the finish line in a time of 2:02:39.22, 4:11.56 behind the gold medalist. Swail is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, and received an M.Ed. in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University. Maureen O'Toole
Maureen "Mo" O'Toole (born March 24, 1961) is an accomplished American water polo player and coach. In over 30 years in the sport, she set multiple firsts for women in water polo, received all the top honors, and in her time was recognized as one of the best water polo players in the world. Life O'Toole started playing water polo during the swimming off-season at age thirteen. At Wilson High School in Long Beach, California she joined boys' water polo because there was no girls' team. She played at Long Beach City College on the men's team for national team coach Monte Nitzkowski. She attended the University of Hawaii on a swimming scholarship, since there were no water polo scholarships for women at that time. Coralie Simmons
Coralie Denise Simmons (born March 1, 1977) is an American water polo player, who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. In 2001, she won the Peter J. Cutino Award, presented annually to the top American collegiate water polo player. Simmons is currently in her third season as the women's water polo coach at the University of California, Berkeley, after nine seasons as the head coach at Sonoma State University. She was born in Hemet, California. Simmons joined other UCLA Bruins, Natalie Golda (2005), Kelly Rulon (2007), and Courtney Mathewson (2008), as the school's four woman Peter J. Ellen Estes
Ellen Marie Estes (born October 13, 1978 in Portland, Oregon) is an American water polo player, who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Estes scored three goals during the bronze medal game against Australia. Estes played for Stanford University. She was a senior on the 2002 NCAA National Championship Team; was a two-time All-American; and broke a Stanford scoring record with 93 goals in her sophomore year. She graduated with an Engineering degree at Stanford, and interned for studied roller-coaster design as an intern with Disney. In 2003, Estes was named the USA Water Polo Female Athlete of the Year. Ericka Denise Lorenz (born February 18, 1981) is an American water polo player, who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Lorenz was born in San Diego, California. Nicknamed "E", she attended Patrick Henry High School (San Diego, California) and was named first team All-American in water polo in 1997, '98 and '99. She was also two-time first team All-California Interscholastic Federation in volleyball and a four-time team offensive MVP in softball. Bernice Jane Orwig (born November 24, 1976) is an American water polo goalkeeper who won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Early career Bernice graduated from Savanna High School in Anaheim, California, in June 1994. There she began her career in water polo playing as goalie for the Savanna Rebel Water Polo team.
