Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. Martin Hanamy
Martin Hanamy (born 21 November 1966) is an Irish former hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Offaly senior team. Martin made his first appearance for the team during the 1986-87 National League and remained a stalwart of the team until his retirement after the 1999 championship. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals, five Leinster medals, one National League medals and three All-Star awards. In 1994 Hanamy captained the team to the All-Ireland title. At club level Hanamy is a one-time Leinster medalist with the St Ryangh's club. In addition to this he has also won four county club championship medals. Playing career Club After experiencing some success in the various juvenile grades, Hanamy made the St Ryangh's senior team by the mid-1980s. The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1994 was the 108th staging of Ireland's premier hurling knock-out competition. Offaly won the championship, beating Limerick 3-16 to 2-13 in a sensational final at Croke Park, Dublin. Pre-championship Prior to the opening of the championship Kilkenny were installed as the favourites to retain the All-Ireland title for a third consecutive year. The last time they achieved this was in 1913, however, no final took place that year and Kilkenny were awarded the title as Limerick refused to play. Jim Troy (hurling)
James Troy (born 11 April 1960) is an Irish retired hurler who played for club side Lusmagh and at inter-county level with the Offaly senior hurling team. Career Born in Lusmagh, County Offaly, Troy first came to prominence during a two-year spell as goalkeeper with the Offaly minor team. After a period with the under-21 side, he joined the Offaly senior team as understudy to Damien Martin during the 1981-82 National League. Troy claimed his first silverware in 1984 when Offaly won the Leinster Championship. He took over as first-choice goalkeeper the following year and ended the season as an All-Ireland Championship-winner after a defeat of Galway in the final. Troy won a further three provincial titles between 1988 and 1990, the last of which saw him captain the team as a result of Lusmagh's County Championship success the previous year. Mark Corrigan (born 1960 in Kinnitty, County Offaly) is a retired Irish sportsperson.
